Author Topic: How do you insert a music file into SNES ROM?  (Read 2 times)

Well, as I'm now no longer a Pokemon, but now Super Mario Kart hacker, I need to know how to insert *.mid* files into it. Yes, I clean some up or just leave them in ripped mode.

Still, how do you insert it?

No, what you need to realize is how music works in systems like the SNES. The music isn't MIDI at all, so it's impossible to just insert a MIDI into a game and expect it to function.

You'll have to figure out how Super Mario Kart's music engine works, then you'd have to either transcode a MIDI by hand into its format or program a utility to somehow do this yourself.

There's a reason why there aren't many music hacks.

So, basically it's harder than DS and GBA games. Time to stop working on my project solo! Ugh... so many things to work on.

Indeed, but he said Mario Kart, not Mario World. Granted, Mario Kart probably uses the same engine as well. *shrug*

Used the wrong acronym; I meant Kart, not World.

(SMW uses an older variant of "N-SPC")

Huh.  Is there some clever document describing the nature of N-SPC and what games use it?  This is the first I've heard of it.  Someone did mention a while ago that the sound engine for SMW in the Super Mario All-Stars + World can be swapped with that of SMB3 with some success; does that have anything to do with it?

It's the basic idea that the same company will tend to reuse the SPC code from previous games in their later games. So, it becomes relatively easy (or at least easier) to insert/change existing music.. such as SMAS music into SMW.

This is not always going to be the case though...

Well, pokemon is a sure-way music hackable game since 2004... yeah, I guess so.
