I'm a Unicode Nazi as well, so you're not alone there Wink It will be better in the future I think with all the programs in development right now, it just has to be Wink

The main problem is that Unicode support in generic hacking tools has been a long time coming (but it will be coming, if a few certain developers I trust to live up to their word are to be trusted...).

The secondary problem is that expecting the games themselves to support Unicode would be a pipe dream in many cases. Old systems do not have that kind of memory (and trying to put every single last necessary accent combination in a bitmap font for a single game for a single language can be tough enough, but all of them for all languages? Quite problematic). New systems do have the kind of memory to support Unicode, but they don’t necessarily bother to do so. So game-specific tools couldn’t necessarily support Unicode even if they wanted to, because you can only fit so many possible glyphs into a game, and particularly older games can’t fit very many at all.

Something like shift-jis would be good, where certain characters are the start of a double-byte character yet the more commonly used English characters you find on your keyboard are single byte characters.

EDIT: Oh! You meant the translation program, not the rom itself.

I used to be a stalwart defender of Unicode until the Unicode Consortium denied my application to include support for Standard Galactic Alphabet characters.  I'm afraid we won't be prepared in time for the Vorticon invasion of 2012.
