Castlevania 2 is a very pretty game, glad that someone's up to extensively hacking it. A vastly expanded game... I presume that doesn't just mean only the levels are going to be bigger. I recall you adapting Castlevania to use VRC6 in another hack you were doing. Do you think it's going to be something like that? Did you get CV2's music engine figured out yet? Knowing that you've worked with CV1's engine, it shouldn't be too difficult to get a hold of. EB XX XX is some kind of vibrato indicator (for square channels), I think.

I presume that doesn't just mean only the levels are going to be bigger. That's basically what I mean. The Accursed Seal was an FDS game, which was limited to 128KB, total. Apparently the NES music engine required more than this, but not much: There are BANKS of free space left over. I recall you adapting Castlevania to use VRC6 in another hack you were doing. Disch actually did this: I just wrote a couple of songs with his new sound engine. Did you get CV2's music engine figured out yet? About 99% of it. It's basically an evolution of the Gradius > Castlevania engine, so I've already documented the large bulk of it when I RE'd CV's music format. I've also figured out a few of the new things (Like the DPCM drum format), but I haven't actually hacked a song into it yet: I'll get everything figured out then. EB XX XX is some kind of vibrato indicator (for square channels), I think. I haven't looked into that yet, thanks. But yeah, TheFakeGod is interested in joining the project after seeing some of the bits Thaddeus and I have done. TFG is an extremely talented assembly programmer, so with he and I combined the technical aspects of what we can do to the game will be incredible. Hopefully Thadd's level design/art and my music/story will also not dissapoint.

Just my opinion, but the CV universe is too confuzzled with continuity holes. Honestly a new story would excite me. It's great to see another SliverX/Thaddeus alliance. At least I can expect you to give NPCs clues that are less cryptic than a David Lynch flick. Let me put in constructive input for what I think would make a solid CV game. A little peeve about CV games I have is that you are a vampire hunter, but most of the games don't even HAVE vampires (save for Dracula). CV64 got a lot of flack, but I always loved that game. Remember how blood-soaked vampires would chase you and victimize your carotid? Scared the piss out of me every time. Keep the enemies grotesque and skinless, that helps. I want the game to have at least one enemy that actually scares me, whose AI is slightly better than that of a red koopa. As for CV2 graphics, I always thought it had a good style, but Simon's walk animation always seem overstated, like he was compromising for something, or running in slow motion. Actually, a run button (B) may not be so hard to implement.

Little update. Here's a look at the new atmosphere we've got going: Sorry for the poor quality. I blurred the art a bit to deter ripping. But pretty soon I will upload some videos of the new levels in action. Edit: post shortened.

Little update. Here's a look at the new atmosphere we've got going: That's really amazing! My major gripe with NES graphics has always been that the screens are always either painfully bright, or dull and monochrome. Thankfully, that screen doesn't fit either description. It honestly looks like an SNES game in that screenshot.

The BG really struck me somehow, like I can almost see depth through clever use of color splashing. The only the thing that bothers me is Simon (if that's who your character will be). He is a rainbow of shades of tan. His sprite looks more GB than NES. I appreciate that you made his outline not-black so that you can tell him apart from the BG, but - Wait, Trevor was the same way, and I never complained about CV3. I think Simon just looks flat compared to the BG, like they belong in 2 different games. I think it's the chromatic diversity that makes the BG shine, so the sprite needs to be 3 well chosen colors.

I like the idea of a CV2 hack, I used to play that game religiously back in the 80's. I found a video on You Tube called 6 Modifications For A Better Castlevania II If anyone wants to take a look, these mods are pretty kick ass. Good luck with this project...

Good find, Googie. I wonder if eggiex1 (who posted the video) knows who wrote those mods. I want those patches.

Hey Thadd, how's it going? Have any more eyecandy? That screenshot is gorgeous. You must've used almost all of the available CHR, no?

I don't have anything new to post right now, although I have revised the graphics since posting that art.
There's still quite a bit free tile space left, not counting the unused space in the original game that I can put to good use. I will probably have about 3 or 4 different "schemes" for the mansions -- to make them a little less repetitive.
One of the things about Simon's Quest that annoyed me was how confusing it was to navigate, because of all the areas that looked the same.

I'd could die happy if you put in real bosses and nothing else. Everything else would just be whipped cream and a cherry on top. ^_^

(yeah, yeah, i know, "holy thread necromancy, Batman!") Just thought to ask if either Thadd or S-X had done any progress regarding this project. It has to do with me being a fan of DXO-II and all
