I don't usually think of songs as scary... but if you mean dark atmosphere I typically think of most of the music in Metroid. (Brinstar and the Ending excluded)

Ninja Gaiden games tend to have some music that I would consider as foreboding, typically in the cinema scenes though, as well its its own share of dark tunes.

can't really think of anything else at the moment.

Sweet Home, probably the only 8bit game to actually cause me to feel a sense of terror while playing it in the dark.

There was a spooky song in Ninja Gaiden 1 in the Kelbeross level.  It's Twilight Zone-ish.
Ninja Gaiden 2 had a song called World Enslaved (The nighttime thunderstorm level), but that's probably not scary enough.

I vote shadowgate. Wait till you start running out of torches. The music paints a very frantic picture.

Although not a nes song, I remember Ceremony (the track from the South Ruins) from Secret of Mana creeping the heck out of me when I was young.

I like the tracks listed so far, some of my favorite games and game music.

For me, it has to be Dracula's Castle in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest.
I remember playing that in the dark too, creeped me out.

Faxanadu also has some creepy tunes, though some are happy sounding.
It's the one that plays toward the end, where there are "cloudy levels"
According the the nsfe I got from slickproductions, the track is
"I need a better sword"...

This one can be, if taken out of context. A :cookie: to anybody that can identify the game it originates from. Grin
