I'm "translating" Pokemon Green to English, which was originally released in Japan. I'm actually just changing the Japanese parts to something similar said in Pokemon Blue, like I saw in some similar (incomplete) patches. But there's a problem in that Pokemon names can only be 5 characters in Green, but I need a maximum of 10 to type the English names and 5 extra spaces on the screen so they'll fit. There's a similar problem with the attacks. Is there any way I can get around this?

Thanks for that. But I've looked through quite a few documents, I can't find anything that would match the description. It looks like I'm going to have to learn gb-z80 to change some code but the Gameboy ASM documents look like they're geared towards someone who already knows an assembly language already.

You'd have to look for Z80 tutorials, then.

Try looking at this. http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/419/It'll take some ASM knowledge, but probably a lot less work overall, if you can simply copy the data from Green into a U.S. ROM. On a side note, you do know that our Pokemon Blue is Pokemon Green, but with the Japanese Blue's altered artwork (and Unknown Dungeon, IIRC)?

I thought the US blue and red were both based off of the blue version in Japan?

It's half-and-half. We got their Red and Green as Red and Blue. The Japanese Blue was basically the original Crystal/Emerald/Platinum: our Red and Blue were the Japanese Red and Green with the improvements added to the Japanese Blue.

Someone over at Acmlm's made a ROM hack of Blue that changed it completely into Green, unfortunately the link to it went down long before this site opened and I've yet to find anyone who still has a copy. Everything was changed, even the compressed sprites, Green had far better sprites for the Pokémon than Blue.
If I was going to do a project like this I'd translate Blue but release it as Green, it would be consistent with the existing releases everywhere except Japan and it would actually be a new game, rather than a game that already came out here. Just a suggestion.

Well the reason I thought to translate Green was actually to keep all the dodgy code that got improved on when they released Blue in Japan, though copying stuff from Green to Blue might be easier. I can hack pointers and map headers etc so that should be no problem.

No. The original Red and Green weren't released outside Japan. They have elements no international edition of Red or Blue does.
Such as the Unknown Dungeon layout, Pokemon front pictures, amount of Pokemon stored per box, green SGB palette and border, some overworld graphics, Cinnabar and Seafoam coastline tile properties (not glitched in Japan to my knowledge).

*looks at Ryusui's post* Oh! I guess all of the Japanese pokemon games need translating.

In our Pokémon Blue/Red and Japanese Blue, they got different grass tileset than in the original Red/Green.
But for some reason, Yellow has Original Red/Green grass tileset instead of our Blue/Red and Japanese Blue. Weird.
Oh, and I think it would be easier to just replace the Pokémon sprites in the Pokémon Green english rom you helped me make with original Green's ones.
