Hey all,

I'm trying to do a hack of the original Friday the 13th NES ROM, and I want some suggestions. My overall goal for the game is to increase the difficulty and to make the game less goofy. I hesitate to use the term "scarier," because I frankly don't see that happening.

I've located some of the music and map data, so I'm trying to work on editing those, and I found some values for the amount of damage enemies do. Any additional input would be greatly appreciated.

Fix the fucking map!

Seriously, that's the only thing I truly hated about the game. Not being able to figure out where the hell you're going in the map. Smiley

Haha, well I haven't found the minimap data yet, nor do I have any idea how it corresponds with actually walking around in the game, but that would be a nice feature to change.

As far as annoyances go (and I know there are plenty), I did change the buzzing sound the game makes whenever the "Jason alarm" goes off. It's about an octave lower and not as shrill and dissonant.

IIRC, if you envision yourself going counter-clockwise, you will understand where you are going.. for the most part...

If you can, add a darker pallette as that would better fit the game than the game taking place during the day. Also touch up some sprites, I remember thinking that Jason didn't even look like Jason.

I thought I remembered the game being hard, I don't know why you are trying to make it harder.

This game is actually more complex than most people realise at first glance.

Tutorials one can find via Google explain it better than I, but there are several intricacies that make the game more than just another idiot Movie-to-VG conversion. For one, Jason is *always* somewhere; he doesn't just materialize at random points and times. The game keeps track of how many low-level enemies you kill, rewarding you with better weapons after certain thresholds are attained. The camp counselors (while all being rather pokerfaced) have different abilities and deficits. Lighting eight fireplaces across the camp rewards you with a flashlight, or something...

Oh, yeah. Jason is easier to kill on the 2-D pathways; you can even chase after him when he splits to inflict more damage. (This last part is especially fun with the advent of Save State.)

If I were to design a hack of this game, I'd replace Jason with Pedobear and the music with highlights from Britney Spears' career. Or maybe I'd turn it into an NES adaptation of Sleepaway Camp. Perhaps both. But then, I have a very surreal sense of humor. If you're looking for more constructive ideas, this might be somewhat useful.

Addendum: The Which-Way-Am-I-Going? map dilemma can be solved by always assuming your perspective is from just outside the camp perimeter, looking inward.

Sleepaway Camp. Ugh. Please no. I don't want Jason turned into ... crap, I want to say what but it's a helluva spoiler. Tongue

This Post Does Not Contain Spoilers (Those can be found in abundance on teh Interwebtubes.)

Sleepaway Camp is an early-80's slasher flick; it involves teenagers at a summer camp being murdered one-by-one. (Sound familiar?) The acting is cheesy, the dialogue is pure camp and the music is exactly what you'd expect from the 80's.

However, despite these elements, there *is* a surprisingly well-conceived plot twist/payoff during the last few minutes. The film owes much of its cult status for this plot twist.

Okay, one minor pseudo-spoiler:

Yes; to the best of my knowledge, Jason Voorhees never used a curling iron...

But if you're at all into that 80's slasher stuff (even if just for the nostalgia factor), it's worth checking out. The ending more than makes up for the first eighty minutes.  Lips sealed
