This project's goal is to translate the Japanese version of this game. I just started lastnight, and so far I've extracted the STR files and added subtitles to the opening movie, but what I'm having trouble with now is reinserting the subtitled STR file back into the ISO. This is my first attempt at PSX game hacking, and I don't really know where to start... Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Also, as a side question, if this game needs to be retranslated, I'd like to do that, and I'm sure I could fumble my way around with that on my own, seeing as there's not really that much text in the game, but does it need it? Was the official English translation good? My problem was with the voices, and I MUCH prefer the Japanese opening movie...

I believe Mega Man 8, X3 (PSX/Sat), X4, and X5, had their vocal opening songs replaced with an instrumental one in English releases.
Not X6 though. Its song was left Japanese.

Ok on Megaman X4 both the japanese version and the US version have the same Insturmental opening . Except it says Rockman on the japaneses version. This is the PSX version i am talking about. If you want the vocal opening , its from the Saturn version of the game not the psx.
Anyways back on Rockman 8. I don't think a retranslation is necessary unless you're talking about the names for each character. Like if you prefer rockman over megaman. Basically i would take the US version of Megaman 8 and have all the sound files and the str files replaced. Then figure out how to sub Str files. And if you really wanted to put effort into this hack , you can try added the 2 secret boss from the saturn version, that would be the perfect version of Megaman 8.

This is very simple, comand line program which allow You to insert file (file size must be the same or less).

Okay, thanks Zoel and Berion... I'm not really sure how to make the file any smaller than it is. During the process of converting the STR into an AVI file to subtitle, and converting back to an STR, there doesn't seem any way to control the file size. It's a couple MBs more, so it's not drastically bigger, but it still seems too big to reinsert it... : \\
And about the retranslation thing: maybe I won't, but then I'd subtitle the movies with spoken dialogue with the already-translated words of the English version, you'd just be hearing the Japanese voices. Does this sound acceptable?

Might be a good idea to compare the Japan and US scripts. It's possible there's minor typos or such, I'm not aware of.

If fps, sound chanels, lenght and other stuff it's the same as in original file then your new file it must be the same size. For file info I have using PSMPlay (v0.4), for compression Movie Converter v3.1 (by Sony ). I think it is the best known for me software for doing this. I hear the cd-tools could better (better quality) convert STR files but this program is very dificult to use. I've hacked Tenchu Stealth Assassins, and I did the same problems that You have are at now. //Sorry for my bad english. I'm not a nanderthal man - really.

As far as I know, LBA is like... a way to index the files on the CD? I think I'd need something like an "LBA for dummies" explanation... : \\

I don't know how to explain it (ahh my english... ). Use ISO Buster program, and everything become simple. Unfortunately they are some games which doesn't use TOC to allocate files - and then, they LBA is not writing in TOC (except SYSTEM.CNF and PSX-EXE). I.e. Xenogears, Chrono Cross.

Say you had memory laid out in a series of bytes. If this is a huge amount of bytes and you wanted to speed up seek access through out this range of large series of bytes, you would group them into "block" of bytes. This is what LBA does - logical block addressing. A common LBA system for CD data tracks is a block of 2048 bytes. LBA=0 is the 1st 2048 bytes, LBA =1 is the 2nd 2048bytes, and so on. The offset to files and such are aligned in LBA blocks. The larger the LBA size is, the faster the seek time is - but you waste bytes as most files don't use all of the bytes in the last block of it's designated storage location/address range. So.. you need to know the block size of the LBA before you can calculate the offset in bytes - if you're editing the file as a raw dumped binary or "cooked mode" images. It's as simple as LBA # * block size.

Incorrect. The psx version does have the vocals in the opening. I am currently playin the jp version of Rockman X4 despite not being able to speak/read and understand Japanese. I think you're are mistakenin the psx ver with the PC one since I believe that version has the vocals taken out but left the Rockman logo untouched.

I'm fairly sure the PC versions of X3/X4 were only released in English, and never hit Japanese shelves.
Even the Korea editions of X3/X4 are 100% English in-game (including title logo). Just with a new installer.
Yeah, very weird compilation. X3/X4/X5 came out as a set there. But only X5 in it had Korean text for dialog/menus.
