Hi everyone. I recently started making my own Zelda 3 hack using Hyrule magic. So far I've only edited Link's house (without moving the sprite or bed since that seems to mess things up for me) and a few rooms of the first palace (East Palace).

I wanted to run the rom in an emulator (Zsnes) to try some of the edited things out and make sure it's all working properly and since i don't know of any faster way, i started a new file and planned on going through the castle, saving Zelda etc until i could reach the eastern palace where the edited material was.

But when jumping down the hole in the courtyard leading to the sprite with the sword and shield, my screen goes black. The sound is still working and i can press start to bring up the start menu, but i cannot do anything else but reset the game and try again, in which case i get get same problem.

I remember playing through the castle part with the same rom earlier without anything edited and it worked fine so i don't think the rom is to blame. Clearly i must have done something wrong somewhere to create this error. Does anyone know of common things you edit to create this kind of problem and does anyone know how it can be fixed without losing any work?

I've read through Orochimaru's guide to Hyrule magic 2 times and i didn't find any answer there.

Sorry if this is a newb question or if it's been answered already, but when i searched the forums i didn't find any answer to my problem.

Hyrule Magic can cause a whole host of unexpected problems. Sometimes it's your fault, sometimes it's Hyrule Magic's fault. The majority of the time it's Hyrule Magic's fault. Wise words for using HM are to create frequent backups so you don't lose data to corruption. The nature of your crash is somewhat strange to me. The fact that you can pull down the menu (you can see the menu, right?) is odd. I'm thinking perhaps the room settings for the room have been changed to a "dark room". In which case it may be the case that the game has not crashed at all, you're just in complete darkness. If you have the lantern, that would rule that out. Since you fall into a pool of shallow water you should be able to hear your watery footsteps as you use the D pad. Have you tried moving around?

Thanks for your answer. I have the lantern, the start menu is visible and can be opened at will, i can not move around in the dark, basically i haven't edited anything even close to the hole yet. I do have a backup but it takes me back over an hour of work but guess I'll have to use it.

I got another question which has been bothering me as well. I was editing a palace and i inserted a normal bomb each in some pots i had placed. When changing room to work on another room i got the error message saying that i didn't have room for any more secret items.

I figured I'd just go back and remove them but when changing back i saw not the few bombs i had placed but the whole room was filled with random items (17 in total) which when removed or interacted and saved they would come back on the same place.

I cannot get rid of them, i cannot change what kind of item they are, i cannot move them in anyway without it all reseting upon leaving the room. I tried removing everything in the room including doors but the items still remain everytime i open that room again. Any way i can get rid of them?

Grin

Sounds like a bug / corrupted rom to me. The people that have released Zelda 3 hacks typically have made like 500 backups at least. This is because Hyrule Magic is so prone to crashing and corrupting data.

As far as running out of room goes, Hyrule Magic is designed to work within the limits of the game's original data. So if there are for example, 200 secret items in total in the dungeons, your hacked rom can have no more than 200 secret items. The only way you can add a "new" item is to delete an old one somewhere else. Same goes for sprites.

Hi! Brand new member here, just searching for help and saw that this post wasn't too old...

My question is pretty noobish: I edited Link's sprite set, and now I can't get it to have a transparent background color behind his sprites- the color on the far right side of the Clothes Palette 0 is now surrounding my sprite. Is there a particular method of making the bitmap that gets pasted back into the Link's Graphics editor? The bitmap is indexed, 16 colors. I tried saving it both with transparency and without (I'm using PhotoShop), and changing the color on the palette to true black (0,0,0), but nothing seems to work.

Orochimaru's guide doesn't give any indication on what to do here- does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

I'd guess the first color (color 0) is always transparent.
