Author Topic: SD Gundam G Generation-F? (PSX)  (Read 2 times)

I recently acquired this little turn-based strategy gem, and it's expectedly 99% in Japanese, 0.7% in Engrish and 0.3% in English. It seems to be the HOLY GRAIL to Gundam fans, given...

- It comprises campaigns for each of the Gundam series released before 2000, which makes it like 20 campaigns in total.
- Contains hundreds of characters.
- Supposedly contains over a thousand units, be it warships, mobile suits and support units.
- Has multiplayer.
- It's damn good!

So I've been trying to find at least attempts of translation, but to no avail, oddly enough. Has anybody checked the files at least? Is it an impregnable fortress or is it that the PSX has such an intimidating power nobody has dared explore the structure of this marvelous game?

There are a couple good guides at GameFAQs that help English-speaking players understand most of the interface, but still, this game seriously needs a translation. A lot of the story and some gameplay elements are lost due to the language barrier.

I don't mean to request anything with this post, but rather get the community's opinion on this appalling situation. Undecided\

Well, yes, I would be lying if I said I wouldn't love a translation for this game, but I also want to know what people think. Tongue

The second one. Many see it as an evil monster from hell, but it's actually easier to hack than most rom based consoles.

OH YES.

I love G Gen F. Got two Space Arks filled a large ammount of Gundams. I've even gone as far as to make one of the Space Arks carry a full load of V Gundams  Cheesy

Anyway as for the game, it's 3 discs but most of the data is on disc 1 (MS, WS, characters (I think...)), stuff like FMV and the missions are on each disc.

Also if this were to get translated, what about G Gen F if?

Just hold your horses!

You can start worrying about that after the main game's translation is done, which is pretty unlikely, given the low levels of interest. It hasn't started yet, and there are no volunteers whatsoever either. Tongue

I'd do it myself if I knew about PSX hacking, but the tutorials just give me a headache. Some guides at GameFAQs translate a lot of the interface, so I could use that information. However, I don't speak Japanese at all either, so I wouldn't be able to go further even if I had the hacking skills.

I'd be very much up for translating it if I didn't already have a list of projects crawling out my butt. I have a soft spot for most things Gundam. I might be in a better position when the script actually gets hacked out. I'm sure SOMEONE will want to work on the script at that point.

The intention's certainly appreciated. I can wait, personally.

I'll try to do some research and see if I can hack the script out. I've no idea how hard that might be, at least until I read a few more tutorials. Undecided\

The main problem with SDGGF (or any G Generation game) is the enormous amount of text in the game that would need to be translated.  Very, very few people have both the Japanese knowledge and the motivation to do a project of that length.  Same reason why there are so many started SRW projects and almost no finished ones.

(IMO G spirits is better than F, but that's just me...)

The only visible differences between the CDs seems to be the names of SLPS_029 (which has a .00 extension on CD1, .01 on CD2 and .02 on CD3) and WARNING*.DA (WARNING1 in CD1, WARNING2 in CD2 and WARNING3 in CD3). The sizes of all the files in the root directories of all three CDs appears to be the same.

Experts, what can you make of this information? Tongue

Also as far as translations go, another unappealing thing about this project is that the storylines in SDGGGF are lifted straight from the source anime (or manga, OVA, etc.) without any change to the story whatsoever.  So you can already find out what happens just by looking at episode summaries of the anime, or watching it yourself.  Even the dialogue is often word-for-word.  So that's a lot of work to translate that huge amount of text to end up with nothing really gained for it.

Well basically whenever you get a dump of anything send it and I'll take a look and see what I can translate.

Adding to what Kern said I have a cool idea, that dub haters, however might hate. Since the story and dialogue is almost always directly ripped from the actual show, perhaps we could rip the audio from the English dubs and put it in the game? That would take a lot to do and might not be worth it. If not that, than we do subtitles.

I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that the warning files are those switch the CD now images.

It's not possible to get a English dub of: Blue Destiny, Rise from the Ashes, Gundam Sentinel, Gundam Double Fake, Hathaway's Flash, F90, Silhouette F91, Crossbone Gundam, Gundam Wing G-Unit, and the extra characters from games and books (Johnny Ridden, Zero Murasame, all the G Gen originals, ect.)
