So I'm picking up LUNAR where EsperKnight left off, and I've got just about everything working. z80 is really not my strong point, though I've managed to do some technical work with MEKA's debugger. (Great stuff, incidentally, I just really wish the disassembly in the main debugger window was scrollable.)

The last (only?) issue has to do with the battle system. Expanding the names out past the initial three characters (ugh) is, for some reason, causing the eraser routine to go haywire and loop crazily.

The character names are the first four entries in the dictionary (address 76B0.) No pointers; it counts <END> codes ($00.) The pointer for the entire block is at 1152, the parameter of an LD HL,#$76B0 command.

I've been banging my head against this for the last four hours or so, and haven't really made any progress. Anyone want to volunteer to take a look, or at least offer some tips? :/

Sort of. The LUNAR games for Sega CD and PSX had official translations. The Gamegear and Saturn ones don't.

Lunar: Samposuru Gakuen was released for the Sega Game Gear in late 95 / early 96. Game Arts released a remake for the Sega Saturn a little less than 2 years later called Magical School Lunar.

Both are great games.. of course the Saturn version is probably superior. EsperKnight has expressed interest in translating the Saturn version as well, so maybe something will come of that (it just might take a decade again!)

Hopefully this technical issue can be resolved soon enough as I believe it is the last one preventing us (us being SGST.. we were only sleeping all this time ;p ) from finally finishing the project. Thank you Gideon and any other helpful hackers out there willing to check this out.

Nevermind - I've futzed with it, and just decided to go with so-called "squishy" text. It doesn't look bad, and it means I won't have to go through and rework a billion menus that are only expecting three tile names :p

Glad to see that this is being picked up on. The game is pretty solid.

Yeah. Quite a few systems used them for various purposes, not always the main processor though.

Game Gear uses z80?

It's a shrunk SMS with a lower res and the ability to handle more sprites than an SMS, so I would imagine so.
