Anyone who can recall Nintendo Power issue 93 from early '97 may recall this little gem: a quirky little RPG from Japan about some kids camping on an island that encounter pirates (and monkeys) and look for treasure... in twenty-two words or less. This game was called "Marvelous: Mouhitotsu no Takarajima," or just "Marvelous" on our side of the Pacific.

Now, I'll be frank, this game is the reason why I going to start taking Japanese at university; I have been wanting to play it in English for eleven years and have desired to translate it ever since I discovered the translation scene. While my Japanese is minimal at best (I'm studying French as my first choice for a second language, Japanese will start this summer), my technical skills in working with ROMs are even more limited. That being said, I have a couple of questions:

  • First, is there anyone available that might be willing to dump the script? I am simply not familiar enough with compression schemes and script formatting in games to perform this task.
  • Second, Is there anyone available that might be able to find the game's in-game font? I have found the graphics for fonts used in the intro text scroll and file-naming screens, but this one eludes me; I'm assuming this is probably compressed, despite the fact that (again, assuming here) the font appears only to be in 1bpp format.
  • Finally, I remember eludevisibility working on a translation for this, but all information about it seems to have evaporated from the internet; does anyone know what came of it?

This is something I have been wanting to do for some time now, and I'll do it all myself if I have to; I just need some help getting started. I also apologize if a request such as this is inappropriate and mods may delete if they wish; I simply want to enjoy an experience that Nintendo deprived American audiences of.

I heard the game did some stuff with the SA-1 coprocessor chip. No idea how difficult it would be (though I've heard that chip was mostly a faster version of the main CPU, 65c816).
Still though, working with code on 2 concurrent CPUs is probably above many hackers' skill level.
(SNES Evil Peer 9 might be able to do it, haven't really checked)

In other words you want some to do all of the work for you.

Heck no, techno; I just need help with things that I have no technical expertise in doing. I'll do whatever secondary graphical work is necessary with the ROM, such as designing fonts, etc., but I don't have the time or resources to learn how to crack compression schemes, wade through possible alphabetic arrangements with Relative Search, or pick up 65C816 ASM with my current class/work load.

As for the SA-1, crud; I had forgotten about its use in Marvelous. Assuming it plays as large a role as I'm guessing it does, I may as well just forget about all this, shouldn't I?

To that extent, yes; I just wanted to be clear that I'm not trying to be lazy or passive about work involved with this - there are just some things I cannot do due to constraints placed upon me, such as my ability to program (or lack thereof), work, school, etc. And just as others have similar constraints, I don't expect the world on a platter here, just some help if anyone is willing; if this is too much to ask for, somebody say so - I'm not trying to step on toes here, even if I do wind up doing so.  Undecided\

Sounds like a pretty standard "translator looking for a hacker" request.  If you can show some proof of your translation skills, you'll have a better chance of finding a hacker who's willing to help.  You might also want to try submitting a help wanted ad:

If I remember correctly, I saw a post on the Whirlpool one time about someone translating Marvelous. I believe there were pics showing english text and such. I believe one of the screenies had a girl telling you to not touch her boob (with the game's cursor doing just that). Tongue

I also remember reading that article in Nintendo Power. It stuck with me, so I was really excited when I saw that post on the Whirlpool. I never heard anything else about it though...

Sorry I haven't made any replies or whatnot, mid-terms have been dragging me down. As for "proof of my translation skills," I'm working on that; my Japanese-major friend is teaching me a little bit and I'm taking courses this summer and fall. Like I said, I'm a French student, but it has long been a desire of mine to learn Japanese.

Yeah, I remember the Whirlpool, seems like it's been gone for a while now, though; I don't recall that post, but I wish I did. Sad Yeah, you can do that as well, touch her boob when you're in the interact mode; she makes a comment about not touching her boob and blushes - it's the simple things, you know? Wink

Actually, this is the game that I most want to see translated too, but it is way beyond my skill level at this time.  Although I am proficient with the NES and am branching out to work with the FDS now, every time I try to learn the SNES it just seems like a lot of work.  And, of course, this game being one that is so late for the SNES, is large, uses a special chip, and is quite creative with it's font.  Thus, it's gotta be one of the worst titles for a newbie to try to start with.

One thing that I would suggest.  Instead of first tackling the main game, you should first try doing one of the 8 BS games that Nintendo made using the Marvelous engine.  Only 1024 k to deal with and no SA-1 chip.
