Typing "text hacking tutorial" turns up [u=http://www.zophar.net/tech/files/tutorial.html]this website[/u]. The second section says to start up a program called Relative Search, but I was unable to find that, even when I typed it up into Google.

Anyone whose done a translation for any game would know that Relative Search is one of the most important tools to translate any game.  Otherwise, one would spend hours and hours figuring out which byte values apply to which letters or kana, even if any given word only appears once in a given game.

Can someone please tell me where to find Relative Search?

WindHex also has a relative search function built in.

Can you search via integers in WindHex (ie, 3,1,2 will find CAB)?  I seem to recall holding on to relsearc.exe solely because of that feature.

Does anyone know any other programs that have the Relative Search feature?  I can't use my copy of Relative Searcher to open up Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, let alone Makeruna! Makendou Z.  When I type in just "Makeruna! Makendou Z", it reads it as "Makeruna! Makendou Z.nes", so that implies that the program is only compatible with NES games.  When I type in "Makeruna! Makendou Z.bin", it does read the extension .bin, but still won't read the .bin file itself.  Am I doing something wrong?

I tried using WindHex, but when I tried loading the game onto it, it just froze itself up, slowed my computer down, and refused to close out until I reset my computer.

So, WindHex is already out, and I don't know exactly what to type into Relative Searcher.  Can anyone please tell me either what I'm doing wrong or what better programs have the Relative Search feature?

Translhextion is currently the best utility for doing relative searches. Unfortunately, it pretty much sucks for every other purpose, so once you've located your data, do your hacking in something else.

Monkey Moore is excellent if you're wanting to do relative searching strictly with English text, but it won't work for Japanese. However, I've talked to the author of the program (both on this forum and via email) and he intends to add a Value Scan Relative feature ala Translhextion (as well as other features.) Once this is accomplished, Monkey Moore should be the final answer for all relative searching needs.

If you haven't already, enable that you see known file extensions in Windows Explorer.
Make sure the whole file path has no spaces in whatsoever. I.e. no "C:\\Documents and Settings\\  spaces rock    \\folder1\\data     1.bin"
Also see above how there are spaces in your file names, that's a no-no, too, with most programs anyway.

That only implies that the program likes to concat .nes to the end of filenames.  It doesn't care what kind of file it is.  Data is data.  Rename "Makeruna! Makendou Z.bin" to "a.nes" and put it in the same directory as relsearc.exe.  Run relsearc and then use a.nes as your filename.  Should work like a charm (unless relsearc has some kind of filesize limit?).  (and, trust me, you'll have to run relsearc multiple times since it only searches once per execution, so you aren't going to want a long filename).
