Has anyone ever attempted to hack SMB to make it two players simultaneous?  I figured that would be a pretty high ambition, but something I'd like to see done.

If that were done it would have to be mario vs mario, cause you wouldn't have a pallette available to make luigi the proper color. I don't think that the rom has empty space for adding something like that anyway.

While it's true that the SMB rom has practically no free space availble, it's trival to expand.

I imagine you'd also have a hard time getting collision detection and such working for two playable characters.

That's true. From what experiance I have with SMB, I'd say you'd have to rewrite large portions of the game engine to get it to work. I wouldn't say it'd be impossible, but you'd have to know ASM and the NES well enough to basically write your own games to be able to pull it off.
