1991
A young Midwestern boy is enduring the decidedly-underwhelming academic challenges of fifth grade. His afternoon math class is especially kittenish, so he decides to find a productive outlet for his creative juices. The 8-bit video game market is still running strong, and the paradigm itself is sterling. Plus, that Ritalinâ„¢ stuff he just got put on simply won't let him remain idle. So the kid decides to design a new entry in the Mega Man series (which at this point is barely up to 4).
The general formula for such an entry is, at this point in time, readily apparent (but not yet comical). So he designs eight new robot masters, eight new levels showcasing their flavor-of-the-week, etc. But all good things must come to an end, and so does fifth grade. The 16-bit era starts roaring with the mid-'92 release of SNES Zelda, and the plans get shoved away with the rest of the elementary schoolwork.
Mid-90's
Someone(s) decide/s to emulate the original NES; every game in the expansive library gets dumped. These files get distributed throughout a series of tubes known collectively as the Internet. A few days later (probably), another someone(s) decide/s to try their hand at altering the contents of said files...
2003
The Midwestern kid (now in college and having since graduated from Ritalinâ„¢ to Adderallâ„¢) is introduced to the post-modern art of ROM hacking via I-Mockery and That One Other Site. He keeps tabs on the scene whenever school and life provide the chance to do so.
2008
After cutting his teeth on a few hacks of his own, he remembers that box of schoolwork stored away in a crawlspace somewhere in the Midwest, within which reside almost 20-year-old plans that technology has finally rendered actionable...

If this is an RPG and involves hacking something like Metal Max to have said kid build said robots and try to conquer the world, AWESOME.
If this is a MegaMan hack that too would be awesome.
As long as the robots do not catch fire.

7 month bump. I liked the heroes idea. Flash man (MM2) can be Hiro Nakamura Flame Man (MM2) can be Meredith Gordon Gemini Man (MM3) can be Niki/Jess Sanders Crash Man (MM2) can be Ted Sprague ( ) I don't think it can really work out, but it was a fun thought.

If someone is needed to help with putting the sprites together, I can do it, but you'll get it back in "Windows Bitmap". It's what I have because I can't install anything. But my work is top notch and a half! I have NO coding skills, although much in the way of design. Please PM me about it if you want my assistance.

Y'know? I've been wanting to see a Fire Emblem or SRW hack that hacks in Comic Book characters. I think it'd be both hilarious and cool to see Spider-Man be supported by Superman as they fight... idk, Venom or something. And then Venom joins and he teams up with idk who and beats up idk who...
... I just found something shockingly disappointing about myself: I don't know that much about comic book super heroes after all!! *shock followed by the apocalypse*
This is where I go away.

hey if we're spouting cool idea for hacks, someone needs to make megaman 1-6, all in one game, all powers, all bosses, all the time.
PS: wow, i just counted it up, that's a good half-year necrobump there.
