Okay first things first:

please don't be too hard on me, i am a n00b ill admit but i just want to know some facts. clearly most f you guys here are very experienced and i just want some info and to see what im doing is going to be possible.

i want to get it out first. i want to make a game of the remak of final fantasy using a rom from the super mario bros for nes.
here is a list of things/questions that i will need to know.

1 will i be able to add backrounds and stuff such bowser's castle backround and change one of his levels on the bit map sprites without changing them all.

2 can i make *new* enemies and not take any out just add with their own attribites.

3 will i be able to add a *heart system* like from the legend of zelda so that instead of getting hit twice that i can get hit like ten times and there will be able to show a bar to represent that.

Well this might be kinda wierd but after typing this i realized that i will probably not be able to accolmplish this on a tiny mario rom so is there another rom/program that i will be able to convert into a rom after the entire new game is done.

Just read a little and tell me what you think. post tuts if you think they might help. and please please tell me if there is an easy way to do this because i spent all night trying to edit just mario and it still didn't work.

And last is there such thing as a blank rom where i can make my own nes rom from scratch?

I don't know how often I repeated this answer on this board already.

Everything is possible.

It's just not easy.

It's not vague.  You asked if something is possible, and he said yes  =P

Whether or not you can do it is a question only you can answer.  Nobody is in a position to know what you personally are capable of other than yourself.

Anyway the answer to all of your questions is "yes".  But is there an "easy way" to do them?  No.

What you're looking to do looks like it would involve heavy asm hacks and/or engine additions and rewrites.  As far as hacking goes -- that's about as advanced as it gets.

As far as a blank ROM, yeah.  The process of building a game from the ground up is referred to as homebrewing.  All you need in the way of tools is a text editor, a hex editor, and an assembler.

Well you're diving right into the deep end before first learning how to swim.

Do basic ROM hacking stuff first.  Read the stuff in the "getting started" section on the left -- read this thread and other stickies -- and just play around and get a feel for what ROM hacking is and how to do it.  Having a goal that's out of reach isn't necessarily a bad thing as it can give you the drive to advance your skills to extend your reach.

thanks for advice guys

what im thinking on doing might just be making a final fantasy bros game with just swapping out the sprites and keeping the heart of the game.

Just use RPG Maker. It's definitely more adapted to your experience and final goal.

Maybe try using a different base for the hack, other than Super Mario Bros..  Like Zelda 2 or Faxanadu or something which has the basic gameplay setup you're wanting.
