Hello.
Where can I find Script Dumps?
I'm sorry if this has been asked before but where can I download Japanese text dumps.
It's a great exercise to attempt to translate anything Japanese and this is what I'm currently doing in my free time.
The thing is, I'm not interested in rom hacking, extracting and whatnot. I'm interested in languages.
If anyone has a reasonably short script they'd like to share, that would be great.
I'm not saying I will finish the whole thing, but I would be interested in giving it a shot.

If you go Misc. -> Abandoned Projects here, you'll find projects people stopped working on. I'm not sure about Bongo's stuff, but Guest's stuff includes a script dumper. You can obtain some scripts that way.

Thank you. I would like to do something like this: This is from Mother 3 translation. I would like to have my Japanese in one box and then I would put the English in the other box. End of story. Just something that simple like that.

Yes, very much so.
But I kind of like having the preview showing what the final result is.
I'm also looking for a full Japanese script which I could translate whenever I have free time.
I realize I'm asking a lot, but I have another question.
Do I have to play through a whole game in order to translate it? Considering that Japanese is so context sensitive I'm guessing that the answer is yes. Did some of you manage to translate without playing the game?

Playing through helps unless you know the game well enough. For Maka Maka, I'm playing through as I translate (also because that's the only way I can figure out the MTE/kanji,) but for Tales of Destiny 2, I know the story well enough that I can get by without playing side by side.

I would say you definitely have to play through the game to actually do a GOOD translation. You can translate a passage of text several different ways. You may not even know how to translate certain passages without knowing what is actually happening on screen. Sometimes by script alone, you may not even be sure what character is talking to who. I know very little Japanese, but I know enough and have worked with enough people who do, to know translating a script without ever playing the game is not going to come out in a form anybody would actually want to use in a real hacking project. You're mileage with getting any projects that have editors like Mother 3 will vary. I don't think more than a small handful of people are using those types of things. I can't speak for others, but I never do it like this because the final output display and what not is completely unnecessary. The translator just takes the the script and translates it in the word processor or text editor of their choosing. The script is then auto formatted either externally via the inserter or on the fly in game, so nobody needs to see the final output, or bother formatting anything. It's simple and convenient for all involved.

True, but your chances of understanding are certainly greater having played the game than without. A few examples. I'll use Maka Maka enemies here. はな男 - I had this originally as "Flower Man," turns out that it's a giant nose with legs (hana also means nose.) In fact, this is a pun where the "flower fairies" wind up being giant noses. That was fun trying to get any comprehensible English translation out of アソコ - Had no idea what to do with this. The enemy is a bigger version of it's name's katakana. いけいけギャル - Thought this was "Bitch," but the enemy is a dancing girl, so I went with Gogo Girl Edit: For the OP, I have text dumps of Phantasy Star 3 and Vitamina Oukoku Monogatari if you'd like either of them.

If you're worried about sheer amount of translating, and PS3 would be too much for you, I wouldn't suggest Mother 3, because it's probably at least 3-4 times as big as PS3 (Which has a small script compared to most RPGs I've seen.

They are not dumps but I have the script of a couple Japanese games. Among the complete/almost complete ones, there are Super Mario Rpg, Rockman 7, E.V.O. the search for Eden, Illusion of Gaia, Demon Crest, Super Robot Taisen, ... Hum, I think that's about it. ^^; Among other notable things, I also have the 2 first chapters of the original Shining Force, which is a must to see if you played the U.S. version. They are in JIS format. Or was it Shift JIS? I forgot. ^^; Anyway, if you want any of them, just ask and leave an e-mail addres to send them.
