A friend and I have decided to translate the game Brandish 2 (made by Nihon Falcom) from Japanese to English. We both have read several tutorials teaching the basics of ROM hacking/translation since we've never worked on such a project before. We've tried searching some strings (written with hiragana) in the game with the relative search in Windhex as well as the Relsearc tool to no avail... we've also tried finding the font using Tile Molester and Tile Layer Pro but couldn't find anything (some UI elements such as the YES/NO boxes and parts of character sprites can be seen in these programs, though).

Could anyone give us some pointers/tips as to what we should try next? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A word of advice to any first-timer: if you can't make any headway on a project, try a different one instead. Doesn't matter how much you feel you need to translate X game: if it's beyond your current level, it's beyond your current level.

From the sounds of things, you already have an understanding of the basics, so it's not for lack of the fundamentals that Brandish 2 is resisting your efforts. Anyway, try viewing the ROM using Game Boy mode in Tile Layer Pro, or go to View/Codec in Tile Molester and select 2bpp Planar. A lot of SNES games store their fonts in 2bpp Game Boy format. If this doesn't help you find the font, try 1bpp Monochrome mode (Patlabor stored its font this way). If you can find what looks like a font in either mode, but it's either garbled or not aligned to 8x8 tiles, then you need FEIDIAN, a powerful but difficult-to-use tool for ripping non-standard fonts from a ROM.

If none of this brings you closer to finding the game's font, then the font is compressed, and to rectify that you'll need some ASM knowhow. This is probably where you should put Brandish 2 on the back burner and try a different, simpler project.

On a side note: whatever project you take, you need to learn how to extract and reinsert scripts. The tools for this are romjuice and Atlas, respectively. Hope I've been of some assistance!

You could load a savestate into vSNES to get the font palette, then scroll through the ROM in the various bpp modes.

Hi, thanks to both of you for your help. I've tried using Tile Layer Pro and Tile Molester in Game Boy/2bpp mode but I still couldn't find anything other than numbers 0-9 and letters A-Z; no hiragana, katakana nor kanji.

However, I can see a couple of kana/kanji characters when loading a savestate in vSNES, as suggested by creaothceann. The characters appear in the VRAM in the MemViewer when I select BG3 in the SceneViewer; 2bpp mode is selected by default in the MemViewer for this background. Is there any way to know where those characters were loaded from in the ROM?

Assuming you're talking about Brandish 2: The Planet Buster and not Brandish 2: Expert,

if you want to see what I'm seeing, open up the rom in NANA, go to 0xf01e0, switch to raw mode (hit 'T'), switch to 1bpp. you'll need to either use feidian or write your own dumper/inserter.
