If you've ever used Lunar Magic, you might have noticed to make just a basic, decentish, level can take one to five hours each. Doing a full, basic no-frills level hack can take a large amount of time, creativity (how many different ways can you make an angry goomba interesting?), and effort.
What else you might have noticed is that Lunar Magic is a wonderful editor. It allows you to save levels to a file - allowing easy importing and easy cooperation.
So I always thought it'd be interesting if a forum ever got together and made a community edit of the game - a large number of people contribute their level or two (instead of grinding out an entire game) and they're thrown together as a sort of mish-mash of very inconsistent stages.
Is this maybe some of you might be interested in?

That could work, but...about how many people do you expect to go through with this? Someone will get the short end of the stick regarding the project's management.

Sort of why I'd like to see how many people here would be interested in it; 30-50 levels would be needed for a decent edit. About half that number of people who say "I am so in" would be needed.
If the community has enough people interested in contributing a stage or two, I'll be willing to set down the basic guidelines and coordinate the thing.

I'd be up for adding a level or two.
I've never used Lunar Magic before but given the popularity of SMW I'm taking it's going to be a pretty simple editor to use. I'd have some questions about time scales and level criterea but I take it they'll all be answered after you have some an idea of the number of people interested.

Count me in too for some levels. Making levels in Lunar Magic is a nice stress reliever. I hope you (or whoever is in charge of this project) doesn't start adding a bunch of custom blocks and asm hacks. I say keep it as simple as possible. GFX changes? \

GFX changes? \ Nah, by "level edit" I meant to just that. Hopefully more people will be interested in contributing after the holidays. I'll edit the first post with details when it looks like we'll have the manpower for a good mix of styles.

I'd just like to mention that the community translation project we tried last year totally failed

If people don't want to submit actual levels, you could always ask for level ideas/descriptions and someone else could make them.
It obviously requires a lot more work out of you, but I think this way is more likely to get something finished.
Just filter all the ideas through the 'Let's Not Make Another Kaizo/Intrigue Mario Hack' Filter where the reload state/rewind key isn't pushed as many times as the jump button.
And for the record, I'd be interested in making a few levels. I fiddled around with the idea of making a Mario hack but there was no way I could actually make a complete one.

Here's a level I did up as to figure out how Lunar Magic works. (And this is it in IPS format, on the NA aka (U) version of the game) Nothing too terribly exciting, a simple change on Yoshi's Island 1. Hell there's not even a pipe to go into (and there's a secondary exit that I didn't remove, but I wasn't certain how and I didn't want to break my little creative streak by doing something that would've crashed the game). It did crash the emulator around the first Hammer Bros. for a bit. I have no idea what caused it, but removing a few sprites did the ticket and it hasn't crashed since (I tested the released version in ZSNES v1.51 and bSNES v0.21 and it didn't crash)

I recommend making a list of all the levels and having people just sign up for one that they want to do. Don't wait till you "get enough man power".. because you might wait forever lol. Just start now and hopefully gain momentum over time. Also that way you might still end up with a game just with fewer levels than you were hoping for

I didn't want to post over in the Super Mario World haXing forums as some mistaken sort of "quality control", but it looks like I'm going to have to.
If my life doesn't melt within a month, I'll start to start pushing this thing out by then. If I have to troll every forum on the internet to do it~

I edited some levels on SMW earlier. I turned yoshi's island 2 into the "corpse cave full of boos. Might I add that I also turned the boos into little stitched up things that open revealing a face when you turn around, but my point is, it doesn't take very long to make a good level on Lunar Magic. The thing rocks. I might help with level editing, but don't get me involved in code or anything, cause' I'm a total noob at that. However, I think any level edited ROM could do with ghapics hacking, it's pretty easy to draw in 8-bit anyway.
