Hello

As the title suggests, I'm a noob. I've been translating a few (easy) PC games starting a few months ago. Now, I've decided to try translating a NDS game, which is a lot harder. So I've been reading up on some docs, searching forums etc. I think I've got the basics and I've started using simply a hex editor. I found the script and I've gotten the table and I'm ready to start translating and inserting the text. But now i ran into a problem, and I couldn't find a solution, so that's why I'm asking here now. This is the problem:
The amount of characters I can use is really low. For example, where one character says: "ぐ ぐー!" it should be translated as "Guu guu!", but I only have space for 5 letters. I can imagine that there's going to be a lot more of that problem.
I think this problem is general for all games, but I don't know what to do about that. Or does this mean I'm fucked and it's game over for me?  Sad

Look for documents about pointers.

This.

Also learn about script dumping and insertion, which is to say get romjuice and Atlas and learn how to use them. You won't understand why they're so useful until you've got a grasp of pointers and why they can be either your best friend or your worst enemy, but learn to use them anyway.

Thanks for the tips. I thought pointers were for something else, but I guess I didn't understand them correctly, so I'll take a better look.

You know, this guy's first project was an NDS game...

You've got the core concepts down - you can replace stuff, now you need to learn intermediate stuff (script dumping and reinserting, as well as graphic replacement.) You're better off than most newbies, so you're doing just fine!

Also, javiskefka, that's an unfair comparison. The guy had already translated several games for other consoles to his own language. He's had more experience than Hernan here.
