:::EDITS:::
I only add content and fix grammar, so don't expect a sentence to disappear.
I'm adding links to content that may be useful for anyone hacking DKC1 or DKC2 at the bottom of this post.

:::ORIGINAL POST:::
Okay, by now I'm sure you're all sick of my aspirations. There's a whole other thread about that sappy crud!  :thumbsup:

I stumbled upon this though:

Apparently it's "proof" that there will be a DKC2 editor. Chances are it's a bad Gameshark code, thought it was interesting. 19 seconds is in no way PROOF though. I didn't even see an editor window.

However, searching for DKC1 yielded some results -

and this as well (was also on the info section of the video):

This one says it's a ROM hack, but it also looks like a gameshark setup:

Anyway, back to the level editor:
Who knows? Maybe getting some people aware here can help get people working together on the complex stuff. From what I know, it's a remake of the DKC1 engine with Game Maker, but it makes sense that recreating the game's engine would require a bit of knowledge that could help out a lot in actually creating a "lunar magic" for DKC. It takes an understanding of the game to actually recreate it, no?  Shocked

And just for all of you out there making sure the newb is staying busy - I altered my first FF1 sprite!  :crazy:

From what I've seen in the past... the best way to get the ball rolling on something like this is to take an active role yourself and find out as much info as you can and report it to others.  People may be more willing to make an editor if there's info already available.  Simply saying "hey let's all get together and make a level editor" without providing any relevent info about the ROM usually won't have desired results.

Not really.  You can get enough of a feel of the game physics for a recreation just from playing the original game.  You don't need to know any of the technical details.  Not to mention data formats (like level formats) for your recreation can be 100% unique -- they don't have to follow the format the original game used at all.

Fan recreations and ROM hacking are two entirely different worlds.

I imagine.
But having a topic like this with the links available does nothing but help give opportunities to those who wouldn't stumble across it otherwise.
I'm only slightly mediocre at VERY low level sprite altering - that's completely competent to enlist a plethora of geniuses to create a "Jungle Magic"? Nope.
 (coined that term, eh?  :happy: )

This thread shows a few people brushing up on actual ROM hacking, not just fan recreation, so there might be potential for contacting one of them to help figure out DKC's inner workings - others have the same goals.
Maybe someone on this board wouldn't have found people on that board?

All I can do is wait for the einsteins of you out there to do it, or get as good as i can in the meantime and end up being the one who DOES do it.  Posting a few info links and such seems to help here and there in all this downtime. I'm working with learning WinHex right now, but my skull hurts. Why not post a thread?!  :beer:
I don't think I'm the one to get the ball rolling, and just put some good hacker through all sorts of hell so I can sit around and do nothing. That's not fair at all.  :huh:
But helping to slant the rolling field a little bit never hurt Cheesy
