OK, now I've tried pretty much every single ROM file there is for this game and tried them in probably 3 or 4 emulators each (including FCEU) and every single time I start the game up I treated to a nice gray screen. So now I'd like to know; which rom should I use, what could I be doing wrong and why does the patch hate me?

He has the mapper set incorrectly in his GoodNES set. I forgot the number of the mapper, so I'll look for it when I get back from work. I'm sorry, please be patient.

Here's the info from the readme file:

By the way, there seems to be a problem running the patched game. See, the version that GoodNES recognizes as "good' has a bad mapper number - it marks it as Mapper #5. But Xodnizel, the author of FCE Ultra (the emulator I use) has a workaround that patches the game so it runs using Mapper #118. This shouldn't affect things much if your emulator is any good, so just use FCE Ultra 0.98.12 and be happy! I'd link you to the emulator but the site seems to be dead for good, so look for it yourself.

Earlier GoodNES distributions had the Mapper 5 rom, but it looks like they now contain the Mapper 118 version. I really don't know why your game won't work. What patching program are you using?

I'm using Lunar IPS, never failed me before. I'm gonna search the net for other versions the game. Maybe there's one little obscure one that I haven't tried yet or maybe I'm just in bad luck and ending up on ROM sites with the old GoodNES sets.

Well, let's try something. Load the unpatched rom into FCE Ultra, then click on Help on the menu bar and choose "Message Log". It should tell you some things about the game. If the window says "Mapper 5", then you have the wrong version... but I think I modified the patch so it changed the rom's mapper to 118.

Mind checking that out for me, please?

So your patch is good, a lot of the Ys III roms out there aren't. Anyway, thanks for your help!

Edit: I checked the mapper thing in FCEU in one of the unsuccessful roms. It said "Mapper:  4"... Yeah, don't know what's up with that really.

Mapper 118 is a varient of 4.
