This poll is based on the discussion in the Super Mario level editor... from scratch? thread.
What if this community was to create an all-new sidescrolling platformer engine and game for Mario, in the vein of New Super Mario Bros., that comes with its own full-featured level editor? (This would be similar to the Zelda Classic venture.)
Mario's sidescrolling adventures have gone through numerous engine-driven changes throughout his career. SMB1, SMB2 (U.S.), SMB3, SMW and Yoshi's Island were each based on a unique gameplay engine (not to mention the evolution into 3D). I'm proposing that we create a new engine altogether, but using familiar characters, objects and design to amass a convincing and COMPLETE fan-made addition to the existing Nintendo repertoire.
OF COURSE, this can't go down unless there is community interest. So that's what this poll is for. IF there is enough support for a new game and new editor, I will organise everything. But primarily, there needs to be at least ONE experienced programmer who is willing to construct and code the engine, and a handful of gifted artistic people.
I'm thinking of calling it Super Mario Universe, mainly because so many names have already been taken, and it could relate in some way to Super Mario Galaxy, that is, some of the enemies could be '2D-ified' from that game, making our creation fresh, relevant, and unique in the fan community. (Additionally, one or more of the worlds could possibly take place on Raphael Raven-like 2D planet stages, but this might be a programming nightmare )
The goal? A uniform object and character system: one type of Mario (with different suits, like Frog Mario or Galaxy's Boo Mario), one type of breakable box, one type of water, one type of lava, etc -- these could possibly be voted on -- so that fans can create levels that are strongly related visually, do not rely on impressive but aesthetically 'unofficial-looking' hacking skills, and could comprise a complete, evolving and involving new Mario game (and probably sequels thereafter).
So? What do you think?
