It was released late in the system's life, and had little or no text that was significant to gameplay. Not to mention having never hit shelves in Europe

But anyway... I'd imagine this game would be very difficult to hack. I'm sure it has tons of graphics compression for one.

Yep, the last original SNES game released in the US (I don't count Space Invaders, Arkanoid or Frogger).
As I recall, the game actually came out in the US first (November 1997 vs. about March 1998 for the Japanese version).

I remember it was awhile before it was emulated correctly. SA-1? Copy protection?

No, there was a English translation done by Nintendo, no matter if there was barely any text in-game (Many of the Kirby games only had text for menus and ability description, so that's no change =P). There never WAS a European version, if I had to clear that out. And there was like only one game released with that copyright chip, and that was some Super Deformed Gundam game. The coprocessor allows the game console to process data faster. IE, it was used to help with it's graphic effects since this was the only game on the console which used dithered sprites.

Here are comparison shots,

English:

Japanese:

I have no idea what version of the game that you have, but other than the Nintendo logo, title screen, and perhaps the credits, everything else was written in English text in the Japanese version.
