Maybe I should've been more specific in what I said above. When I was talking about searching for "aitemu" and such I was using Romaji Search, in which you specifically HAVE to search for the characters. In any other relative searching program, I'd use numbers for searching (for instance, 81 82 100 114 would be "aitemu". Anything SHOULD work as long as the distances are +1, +18, +14. Right?).
However, I'll save what you put up (I can't read it, but I'd imagine it's katakana) and give it a shot when I get home, thanks.

Use the relative search function in WindHex. It doesn't matter if you can read it or not: just find the characters of the string you're looking for in the font, start with the first, and count off "A-B-C..." noting which letter you come to as you reach each of the kana.
If the font is ordered like my example, using the string "ABS" with WindHex's relative search should give you your first inroad into the game's table. If not...then pray to God there's a Wonderswan emu with a debugger, 'cause you're gonna need it.

*headdesk* I'm guilty of not being specific enough again. I read kana just fine, but I'm at the library and they don't have the IME installed, so all I see are little blocks.
I understand the relative search basics, so please don't treat me like I'm an idiot. I found a copy of JWPce that I can run without installing anything, and I opened it up and pasted your example. Yeah, it's in the typical kana order.
Also, would I want to put spaces between each value (as in "A B S") or does it even matter? I'd tried both ways when I searched before.

The way you search for the numbers should be perfectly fine. If it isn't bringing anything up, you should try it with wildcards in between the numbers.
An other possiblity is that the game uses some sort of dictionary or dte compression. A common used word like map would be likely to have it's own code then and would thus not show up with relative search. Try a few other words, some which are quite rare even.

Yeah, I kinda thought so. I'll try the wildcards thing, hopefully that works. I'm thinkin' maybe they're not just one byte characters, since the font is a 16x16. Is that a possibility?

Not necessarily. If it does show up but not in the correct context, you've probably stumbled onto the dictionary instead of the string.
