I just noticed that there have been several sonic hacks released with in the past few days for a contest over at the S2Beta forums (start on page 4 and work your way to the end) althought I don't know how complete they are.

I download several and they were really fun.

Sonic 1 Megamix by Team MegaMix
Super Sonic in Sonic 1 by Puto
Sonic 1 Remastered  By Puto v 1 (Previously Yet Another Sonic 1 Hack)
Tails in Sonic 1 hack by DRX (the original release was buggy but Puto fixed that in this version v1.6)
Sonic the Hedgehog - The Other Extended Edition (Beta 3) by Keiji
ChimpoQ! by Rick Danto

So I'm going to quote Byuu on from this Thread and say

I'd like to try and start a new movement to go back and improve older games (ala BoF II), rather than just focus on the remaining untranslated games that nobody is really interested in (ala BAZOO).

I really do hope to see more of these types of hacks!

*Edit*

Also The MegaMix IPS Link hosted here needs to be updated to V3.0 but since they released it as a rom I don't know how to make it into a IPS to update the link? Maybe mods could help?

I wounder what IPS patching software Tweaker was using to make the IPS Patch?

He said it was a lot bigger than the rom.  A load of rubbis.  Its just slightly less bigger than the hacked rom by 100kb.

I'll see if I can update the patch on romhacking.net.  Smiley

EDIT: Download the IPS patch here for now http://www.freewebs.com/emberhack/Sonic%201%20Megamix%20v3.0.ips

I use StealthPatch. While your result file is smaller, a 1MB IPS patch is still absurdly large.

OMG! 1MB! Tongue

Tweaker, to put it simply, hosting roms is illegal and could get you site in trouble.  Normally IPS patches are small and don't contain any copyright material which are fine to host.

The IPS I made is the same size as the rom is because you have made a lot of changes!

But the Sonic 1 Megamix has been updated on romhacking.net!  Download the patch here.

RadioShadow, in cases like this however, when the patch is based on a reassembled version of the game and much of hte original game content was shifted a few bytes where new routines were inserted etc., it becomes very possible that the IPS patch itself could actually contain SOME of the copyrighted material. It's still better than a ROM, but technically speaking, it could. That's one of the arguments for NINJA and other potential replacement patch formats to store XOR'd data. However, even then, just because the data is XOR'd some argue it's still copyrighted data.

None of this matters as we're still hosting the patch, but just to get it in the open that it is possible for patches to contain copyrighted material depending on how they they are based on. 99% of patches are probably perfectly fine though. It's only cases like this where a game was disassembled and reassembled where large portions of the original code or content is merely shifted to a new location. IPS needs to record that as a change. More advanced patchers in the future may mark this as a shift/move and not actually need to contain the data in the patch, but IPS still does.

The thing with Sonic hacks is the usually alter at the source level, so since all of the code is now in a different place, the copyright material will still appear in a simple IPS patch. The only way I can think of is to patch at the source level. That'd actually be kind of cool. Smiley

Simon wais forums have been allowing Sonic roms for ages. For some reason Sega don't care about roms of their sonic games being distributed. I want to try that Tails revision, if those bugs are finally worked out from the previous version then that should be hosted here.

I agree, it should be hosted here. From what I understand Puto fixed most if not all the bugs in the game.

Check the official PAGE HERE for more details.

I played it through the first 2 Acts and I didn't notice any issues.

Between Sonic and Super Mario World, there are an awful lot of hacks not hosted here. I remember browsing through a page that hosted around 15 or 20 SMW hacks. And a quick look around GoodSNES showed me that half of the set is composed by these type of hacks.
