Is it possible to replace a sound sample in an SNES game by inserting a new one, such as replacing, say, the sound of Mario jumping with the sound of a duck quacking. Or perhaps more interestingly, replacing the instrument samples used in the music?

I realize that if such a thing is possible, there'd be a details to deal with, like sample quality, length, etcetra....and details on that kind of thing would be great, but I'm mainly just asking if it's possible at all.

(the only thing I can recall in my dim memory that would've indicated such a thing possible is the search for amateur talent for a Star Ocean dub, but for all I ever knew that was a cruel - if clever - prank)

There was a tool I used a looooooooooooong time ago called SNESSOR. The Windows 95 version could only rip samples, but I think the DOS one could replace them, too.

I have no idea how it works, or if it'll work on modern computers, though.

It was lost in the most infamous translation-scene HD crash.

I've actually got a whole bunch of the tryout .wavs back, but the actual dub had barely even started by then. I had written a program to convert .wav files into SO's format and then rearrange everything so it would all fit. It was pretty basic stuff actually, but I forget how it works after all these years.

But I think Cidolfas was working on a newer dub a couple years ago. I don't know what happened to that though.

Anyway, sound replacing is definitely possible depending on how the sounds are generated. If they're prerecorded things then you just need to know where to put the new data. The SNES sound format itself is pretty simple and there's probably documentation here on this site about it.

Definitely possible. You could either look for a tool to do this [very unlikely to find such a thing] or try to figure it out yourself.
Read up on the SPC700 and maybe look at these utilities.
Have fun & good luck.

You should remember the complete Tales of Phantasia dub, so that most audio sample modification could be made.

On a side note, that release date for the SNES version of the game is most certainly wrong (10 December 2005)... it's after the patch's given release date even. >.>

Edit: Submitted an update to 15 December 1995, based on info from wikipedia.  Even if it's still wrong, it's closer to the actual date than anything in 2005. Tongue
