The act of finding out the techniques is fairly enjoyable, reading about the results of course not so much.

True, but that's not everything to it. The magical illusion depends on itself, like some games rely on hardware effects. Games that tell a story or have incredibly fine-tuned gameplay (SMW, CT, Super Metroid, Zelda) can still be enjoyed even if you know how they did the effects.
