Hey guys. I am new to the scene. I have an idea for the GBA game Mother 1+2, and for those who don't know it is Earthbound Zero and Earthbound in America. Any ways I really was hoping they would of brought it to America but they aren't. So i decided i wanted to try my own pseudo translation of it. The is already a patch out for the Mother 1 portion but there is not a complete one for mother 2. Since mother 2 was release as earthbound in America for the SNES i already have a translated script of the game. Now my question is what programs should i use for the gba hacking. all the tutorials show how to do it for snes games but i haven't found anything specific on GBA. I understand it is not a simple copy and paste. any help would be much apreciated

Doesn't matter. The concepts and techniques are universal, not console specific.

ok i got all my programs and i was able to make a table for the SNES version of Earthbound. Al though i am still missing some of the punctuation. Now the problem is finding the game text. the only thing i can find close to text is EARTH BOUND once at line 101C0. If any one wants to help out with this project let me know ill send you my table.

Wait why do you need a table for Earthbound? Didn't you say you already had a script dump? Maybe I misread... If you really need a complete table you can get it from here. (I can never find any table files on RHDN so I assume there aren't any. If anyone wants to correct me then go right ahead ) Hell, you might even be able to get a complete script dump at starmen.net. Just poke around the PK Hack board and I think you'll find one. If you can't find it then you could try asking someone for it, though that should be a last resort. I know a few people were translating EB into other languages so I would assume at least one of them has a script. As for putting it in the GBA rom, I hope you know that it would require a lot of ASM hacking, at least to make it not suck. You said you're new to the scene but not that you're new to romhacking, so I'm hoping that you know what you're doing.

EB's script is pretty insane with the control codes, in fact it's its own programming language. Even after all these years we haven't figured out what every code does either When I had free time a few months ago I started working on some EB-hacking things, like hacking EB into EB0 and making programs so people can translate EB into other languages. This all required the script so here is apparently my latest script dump: http://tomato.fobby.net/junk/ebtrans/script.zipIt's gonna take a ton of work to make it compatible with the GBA ROM though. I'm not even 100% sure it's implemented the same way. Good luck though

Iwata was the main programmer for Mother 2 I believe, actually. I'm not sure about the other people, but I've never heard of those places so I assume not. I also assume they're Sylvanian companies in nature

While you're around Tomato, any progress on the Mother 3 script (you can PM)? I'm wondering if I'll be able to see if my inserter works or not... ;P

I also assume they're Sylvanian companies in nature They've worked on other things, but they're featured prominently in the end credits of SF1, yes. And SF1 had the exact same "issue" with its script that Earthbound has.

I may be in over my head at this point but i still have no regrets. i will do my best to figure this out. In all reality i am doing this because on psp i can not run the game at full speed with the sounds. and as many EB fans know the sounds of the game make it worth playing. along with the dialog. I also have a DS with flash carts but the SNES emulators available currently suck. nothing against the people who work to make them the best but at the current state many games are unplayable.

Question!?! Why translate a inferior version of it when you can just emulate the snes version on gba? Or play the snes version straight up? It has better resolution and is just plain better. I know you are doing it because you want to do it but it just seems like a bit of a waste of time seeing as there are better versions out there in english.

I think that would be a lot less of a headache.

Like some one just said all the SNES emulators for PSP/GBA/DS are crap. not to say anything to the people who put hard work into them. i greatly appreciate it. But the best emulator for portable right now is the emulator for PSP which if i want to play it at proper res and game speed i have to a) turn the sound off or B) lower some mhz sound setting to where it sounds like i am playing my psp under water. Also does anyone know if ChrisRPG is still around. i tried contacting him for some help but he seems to not be around. He is from RPGone.co and was working on an actually translation for it. He has the script dump for the GBA version but i can t get a hold of him to get that or at least some table file help to do my own. so far i was able to get all the hex values for the jap alpha bit. which took a lot of time lol. But i still can't find the actual script. When i look at tomatoes file for EB i know i am missing alot of stuff but dont know how or where to find that stuff.

Someone is already working on that ( and it looks really nice), but I enjoy hacking EB and something like this is a really good challenge. I don't expect to finish it for a long time, but pet projects are like that. Also, in the course of making the hack, I've already made tons of useful tools and stuff that benefit other people, like programs to help people translate EB and programs that make it easier to make big hacks. I was actually making good progress but the map editors kept screwing up so I have to start the maps over from scratch, so I'm taking a break for a while
