I understand how text is used via sprites and the hex code that calls it up.  But what I don't get is how text is called up when no text is in the pattern table.

For instance, in Megaman 3, the title screen uses sprites but the pre-credits text doesn't.  This makes it easy to change "CAPCOM" to "MAPCOM" but not apparent how "WILY RAN OFF" is changed to "MILY RAN OFF".

I'd love some insight on this.  Thanks.

Most of the time (we're talking well over 99%) text is drawn on the background and does not consist of sprites.  Only in sparse cases does it involves sprites.

Rather than go into details on how text is stored -- I'll just wimp out and point you to the docs page -- as the questions you are asking would be answered and thoroughly explained by any beginner text hacking doc.

Ah, don't worry.  I feel a little stupid now because it was just simply a different table being used.  It threw me because all the Mega Man 3 tables I've found didn't show the one I needed.  I just hashed out a new one.  Maybe I'll throw it in a zip file and submit it.

Still trying to find the ending to Megaman3 for MegaLion?

I was looking for it yesterday and didn't even think of looking specifically for text storage.
