So, on March 27th, my fiancee's father passed away, and it threw me for a huge loop. I have not had the will to work on my hack of Final Fantasy, or the minor graphic help that Googie asked of me, which makes me feel like a bit of a loser. Has anyone else put up with a big incident in their life to find ROM hacking hard to get into?

Not really, but I do find that sometimes I get a bit burned-out on a project and have to take an extended break. I haven't even looked at the script for Breath of Fire II in nearly two weeks...

That reminds me how much I wished they had made BoF3 on the SNES... Cause I love the genes in that game...

Eh. Anyhow. How do you get yourself back to working?

Sorry to sound sappy but I've had similar things happen to me this year. Financial crisis, personal conflicts, crashing computer, and the coup de grâce would be someone in my family passing away.

I haven't worked on my PSX TR2 texture/palette editing in months, and I still manage to drag my ass out of bed at 6 am to work in a lab for 8 hours non-stop Monday through Friday.

That's how I am, I do a ton of work on a project and then put it to the side for a long time (Sometimes too long, and they get forgotten, like some of my NES hacks I was working on), usually picking up a side project to work on until I get the motivation to work on the other one again.

i'm sorry to hear that.

just give it some time. you should feel motivated again whenever you're good and ready.

You'll get motivated again in due time. Do something else for awhile and come back to it later when you're ready. It's a hobby. Why do it if it's no fun and you aren't motivated to do anything? That sounds a lot like work to me.

Don't pressure yourself to think you have to get back to work right away. Everyone needs time to process information and recover, especially from large shocks like this. If you bury it and attempt to keep going like everything's normal, it will eat you from the inside.

Don't stress it man, handle your business, and you're not a loser. I lose motivation at times to ROM Hack myself, and most'a the time it's cause I suffer from depression, I even get those nasty thoughts of killing myself. I know how it is to lose a love one, be there for your fiancee, she'll need all the support she can get.

I don't remember who it was that said that we romhackers have a higher incidence of tragedy, drama, or psychological problems than average. :p

I won't bother going into my little list of problems. There's no point.

It might be cursed, guys.

Thanks for the support from those who gave it, and Advice from everyone. Especially Googie. I swear, as soon as the funk is over, I'll do the graphics. I'm just very... yeah.

I did play some of it. And by that I mean I'm stuck on level two.

Where did you get stuck in level 1-2? Take a snapshot if you wanna. Btw, I added you on AIM.

Um... not far in, actually. I found the portion with the bouncy notes was a bizatch...

You know, I've been here a couple months, still don't know what words aren't okay...

Alright, man. IM me whenever. I'm gonna replay the game some.

I just take a break for a while. It's like a Chinese Finger Puzzle: the more I want to continue, the harder it is to actually get back on the trail. After a few weeks, the spark just comes back.
