This was a recent submission we got. I found this document so interesting, I thought I'd make a topic just to get people aware of it's existence.

This is a full explanation for why the 'minus world' exists, how it is triggered, and why it does what it does. It also includes code explanation.

If you've ever wondered about this glitch, this document explains everything in detail not to mention as a side effect gives you a good understanding of how SMB works.

On a side note:

I'm sure most people have visited the minus world in the NES version of SMB... but the FDS version's minus world is like 5000 times more awesome (multiple levels with much crazier and more interesting quirks).  For anyone who hasn't tried the FDS version out yet -- I'd recommend trying it at least once.

Interesting read. I only understood 2/3 of it, but good stuff nonetheless.

I will be perfectly honest. I've never even heard of this.

I think the first time I ever heard of the Minus World was in the DKC2 instruction manual, where they jokingly said the Minus Barrels in the rollercoaster stages "send you to the Minus World". I kid you not.

It was a few more years until I heard the details of the Minus World glitch: I had SMB for NES, but I never stumbled upon the Minus World myself.

So anyways. I'm not sure what impressed me more in those two videos: how supremely screwed-up the FDS Minus World is, or the insane skill level of the person playing. O_O;

That's called a TAS.  Nobody is really playing that -- it's manufactured button presses.  (Or if not manufactured -- extremely heavily edited/manipulated)

Apologies...I'm not very good with unfamiliar acronyms. What does "TAS" stand for?

Tool-assisted speedrun, I believe. Basically, speedrunning a game using emulators and such to exploit glitches, slow motion, etc.
