I'm not sure if this topinc belongs to translation hacking or just hacking.

Anyway, I have started making tables for the Japanese version of Illusion of Gaia.
Apparently, they are 2 of them, one for the menu and the text in the title screen
and another one for the in-game text.
Apparrently, some of the bytes in the segond table are for kanji and tiles.
Basically, you first have the first byte for the set of kanjis/tiles and then the second one for telling which kanji/tile in the set.
I'll be busy for a while. X D
Also, I noticed that there is a byte that change the text, usually from hiragana to katakana.
There seem to be exceptions though.
Kanjis don't seem to be affected by the katalana byte though.
So, for now, I'll end the table for kanjis and Katakana and afterward... I'm not sure. ^^;

Oh, by the way, the second table don't just enter characters in the text.
I don't think I have figured all of it. Some thing seems to do nothing but maybe it's just because I haven't figured out.

I have finished making the tables for kanjis and Katakana.
There was above 600 kanjis for the game. X D
That and the 6 hieroglyph pictures.

Anyway, Now, the only thing that is missing is finding the code that affect the text.
Stuff like the one that change the font color, change in Katakana or end a line. Stuff like that.
Then, if I understood properly, I'll have to use thingy for looking for the text and dump it, right?
Is there a program that does that and can display Japanese text? It would help me a lot. ^^
I can recognise it easily if I see it.
I don't know yet if the text is compressed either. ^^;

So, does anyone have suggestions as programs to use or maybe as technical files to read?

Personally I like WindHex. It's an all-in-one utility basically. It's a hex editor that allows you load, create, and edit table files. It's also has a tile viewer and numerous search features. You can also dump scripts with it as well. There's probably a few more features that I left out as well.

It is normal if I can only see English letters but not Japanese characters while I view the rom data with it? ^^;

In order to view japanese characters you need to enable the option "view text as unicode". If you don't do that then the japanese characters turn out as gibberish.

Thanks, it's much better.
However, now, I see a lot of gibberish Japanese text.
Well, I guess it had to be expected. ^^;
So, any suggestions for differentiate gibberish from actual text?

The genuine text should all be lumped together. Look for strings from the game; the kana search function helps a lot.

Ok. I just want to be sure to not miss any. ^^
Anyway, with the Japanese script and the tables, finding the text shouldn't take long. : )

Speakinf of table, I have a table for menu and another one for the main text.
The second table use a code to switch the text in katakana.
Is there a way I can implant that into the second table so that the text is showed in katakana?
If not, I should still be able to find the text, it will just be in hiragana instead.
Should I worry about that If all I want to do is a text dump?

Owww...sounds like you'll need Romjuice's dual-table ability.

I've never used it - completely forgot about it until just now, in fact - but it's possible to use Romjuice to dump a script using multiple tables. Take a look at the readme file; it explains more.

On a side note, with the menue script, I have found the title screen text followed by a list of items name.

How do you start a program in DOS?
I would like to start romjuice but I don't know how to make it start through DOS. X D
I'm able to start DOS and change directories and that's about it.
Also, I tried to run Thingy32 (the Windows version) but all I got was a error message. ^^;
Anyway, meanwhile, I have started dumping the text with Windhex.
I'm not sure if I am doing it right as I get several files with the text inside.
Instead, I expected a single file with all of the text I selected though Windhex.
Anyone want to check the text dump to make sure I do it right? ^^;

Might I ask how exactly you've found the values for the characters?

I just grabbed a copy of the Japanese version, and I'm going to look at it a bit when I get home. If there aren't any huge issues with it, I'll try to get a .tbl file going for you, if you'd like. ^.^

Since I knew there was English script in the Japanese version, I searched for that.
I somehow got lucky as I tried to look for a name in the credits.
It wouldn't have worked but the same name was in the intro screen. Beginner's luck. X D lol
Anyway, from there, I was able to make the menu table.
From there, I used the script and some more relative searching to find the Japanese in game text,
more precisely from Gaia at the end of the game.
From there, it has just been a matter of time to make the Katakana and Hiragana table.
Now, I am entering the hiragana (and kanji!) table into WindHex to do more script dumping,
hopefully properly. ^^;
So, actually, I think I'm fine with table, the only thing worrying me is the code switching the text to the Katakata table/mode.
What is worrying me more is if I'm doing the dumping properly.

In any case, I sent you most of my stuff at your email address, so you'll be able to have a look. ^^

Just type the name of the .exe (you might need to enclose it in "s if it contains spaces).

At last, I have reached the big bulk of dialogues and I am currently dumping them.
Is it better to make a big single dump of text or to separate the dialogue as much as possible in small dumps?
And most importantly, why?
