It's 15-Bit BGR format...

The SNES uses a palette whose entries can be modified by the game; vSNES shows the colors recorded in a savestate.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll have to learn how to use vsnes one of these days. Seems like a great hacking tool.

For the 18 millionth time...

VSNES is amongst the most underrated, most ignored SNES hacking utilities for no good reason.

I just don't get it. It's one of the best hacking tools there is for the SNES, not to mention extremely useful as a learning tool for homebrew.

It's a losing battle I guess...

It's not really rocket surgery, Joe. Just start the app, load the savestate (folder button) and open the palette viewer (colorful button). Easy as pi.

I'm just getting into snes hacking, but have hacked nes for a while. How/why should I know about vsnes??
You act like this is common sense or something...
I didn't read any "getting started in snes hacking" since I'm familar with the basics, but I'd imagine there is useful info there.
If you tell me vsnes is mentioned in newb documents, then I deserve to be hit upside the head.

I guess you're being condensending just because nightcrawler is. Roll Eyes
I'm not knowledgeable is snes, thus need to figure out some things.
For example, the palette viewer is giving me a 2 digit hex value for the color insted of 4.  Would you rather have me post vsnes questions here when I can probably read faqs to figure it out?

Relax man. I was making a general statement to everyone because VSNES is always ignored and/or nobody has heard of it.

Nobody was being condescending. creaothceann created VSNES. He was just letting you know there is little learning curve to get started in using it.

This is the Internet. Don't take it personally.  Wink

It seems to be, for those who have frequented a couple of SNES-related boards and sites for some time.

Not yet, I think.

Not at all. Wink

See technical docs. I've found Piken's stuff helpful when I started, but he's got some things wrong. (His layering model is different and hence too complicated.)

Writing good and accessible documents is hard, so just read 'em all. When in doubt refer to anomie's doc set.

For example, the palette viewer is giving me a 2 digit hex value for the color insted of 4.

It gives you 3 values - one for each base color. The SNES defines color by 5 bits of red, 5 bits of green and 5 bits of blue; each is either decimal or a 2-digit hex value.
It's different from the NES and much more closer to PC graphics.

Well, I don't mind. There's even a vSNES thread on the ZSNES board, if you prefer that.
Btw. vSNES has a help function that explains the program functions.
