I wanted to take a crack at Super Metroid. While the changes I plan to make are relatively simple, I'm not sure what sort of problems I might have to work around in order to pull them off. Here's a quick run-down of what I want to try:

 - Completely remove the black box at the top of the screen where the status hub is displayed (Samus' energy, items, etc.)
 - Change all the item icons on this hub (that should be easy enough)
 - Remove the grapple beam icon from the hub altogether, and remove it as a selectable option
 - Rework the controls to where pressing and holding L will select the grapple beam instead of aiming
 - Rework the controls to where the run button is assumed to be pressed at all times (auto-running effect)
 - Rework the controls to where pressing and holding R will select missiles / super missles instead of aiming
 - Rework the controls to where pressing SELECT will toggle between missiles and super missiles
 - Super-impose all the icons (and map) from the hub onto the top of the screen, similar to the transparent style used in Fusion and Zero Mission
 - Possibly cut off a very small area of the screen (don't know yet)

The intention behind this is to make a more GBA-friendly ROM of Super Metroid that can be played via FlashLinkers. I'm not sure if I can pull all this off by myself, or at all. I just wanted to get a few opinions before I waste my time on an impractical idea.

Might work if you change some parameters in the HDMA table.

Well, this would throw off gameplay dynamics, IMO. How would you do that anyway? (You could remove the top section completely though...)

By small portion, I mean about 5 or 6 pixels on either side. I'm not sure if it's necessary or not. The idea would be to preserve the integrity of the sprites without squishing the whole screen to fit the GBA's native resolution. So, I figure removing the hub and trimming a few pixels (which would hardly be noticable) from side-to-side would create a perfect fit. But again, it may not be necessary. It depends on how I could adapt the screen -- without the hub -- to fit on a GBA screen.
