This is my first time looking at the insides of a Genesis ROM and of the two games I looked at I could only find the dialogue font from one of them. Both the menu font of that game and all of the font in the other game are nowhere to be found using Tile Molester. I searched and found no Genesis information that was of any help. So, am I to assume that these games released in 1990-1991 use some kind of LZ compression? I don't work well with compression so I think I need a little help at least identifying if it is or not. I'm only looking for someone that knows the Genesis fairly well and has done enough hacking that could probably answer my question in about 5 seconds flat. I'll refrain from posting the game names until I find such a person. Thanks in advance if there is anyone that can help.

Well, I have a fair amount of knowledge at this point. Go ahead and ask your question and I'll see if I can help.

Oh, and I LOVE the VWF routine in this game. "";D Original default dialogue font: My new dialogue font: The other game (for which I can't find ANY graphics at all) is Sword of Vermillion.

Have you checked all the viewing modes? I had the hardest time finding the font in Bare Knuckle 3, because it was 1BPP font and I was only viewing with the "Genesis" 4BPP mode.

I literally tried EVERY mode in Tile Molester...EVERY mode...and nothing. I'm begining to think that Genesis ROMs are compressed as hell...I looked at Bare Knuckle 3 myself (I was going to translate it years and years ago) and was quite displeased with my lack of progress. Never thought about 1bpp back then...lol.

The SEGA Data CompressorI'm not so sure, since I've only used it for Sonic games, but this tool covers the Nemesis, Enigma, Saxman, and Kosinski compression formats used in Genesis. If you know what offsets the compressed data is at, then you should be all set.

So, is this a retranslation of Shining in the Darkness, or a hack of some sort, or what? Just curious.

Metal Knucles is right. Many Sega games (Castle Of Illusion, Golden Axe, Revenge Of Shinobi, Super Monaco GP, even the Thunder Force series...)use this kind of compression (Nemesis is the most common). Use the Nemsearch in the MD program pack to find some data. For RedComet, Streets Of Rage 3 title screen use this format. This is how I've done my Pulseman french translation, all the script is actually stored in a 32x32 Bpp graphic format, if anyone is interested in an English translation I can send you the files to modify and reinsert them for you.

I am! Though I'm fairly sure someone was working on one at one point... ^^;

Now I just have to figure out how Sega stores their stuff...hopefully better than Square did back in those days. Yes and no. I'm going to try and do a few things to it that I've wanted to do since it came out. "";D *edit* Metal Knucles is right. Every ROM I try with nemsrch.exe shows this (and by every ROM I mean even the ones you mentioned):

Haven't tried it, but the immediate question... does SMD/BIN format matter?

Good question. I've also tried that Sega Data Decompressor on Sonic with the offsets it gives and it doesn't work either. I got lazy and did a mass ren *.bin *.smd in my Mega Drive ROM folder...I'm OCD about little crap like that. Maybe I should use a converter and convert to the formats and try again.

Renaming a file doesn't change its guts. FlashPV, you probably just saved me a lot of time and a couple headaches.

SMD files are all messed up, BINs are straight-up data dumps. Renaming won't work.

What I was trying to say was I like ALL of my ROMs of a particular system have the same file extension.
