I had a few ideas for a project involving Zelda II, but I can't seem to find any suitable (working) utilities. I gave "Zelda II Edit" a try, but the program refuses to load any ROMs. (I even tried a copy of the ROM known to have a good header) The error I always recieve is:

"Bad file name in module"

Any other recommendations?

Yes. This is the very program I am having trouble executing. I either get the error mentioned aboved, or the program simply crashes on attempting to load the ROM.

Don't know what to tell you. As far as I am aware, there are only two other Zelda II editors out there. One is Mac OS X-dependant and the other one hasn't been released to the public yet.

Hmm. Could it be a compatibility issue with my system, then? (WinXP SP2) I doubt I'm doing anything wrong -- I've followed the documentation closely.

"Bad file name in module" is a runtime error that occurs in programs made with BASIC. It might be that the program doesn't like what you've named your Zelda II ROM, or that the author has hardcoded a directory in the program's code. Try renaming your ROM file to something that fits into the 8.3 conventions (like, say "Z2.NES") and rerunning the program. If that doesn't work, the program DOES include its source code, so you can go bug-hunting for the error, should you have knowledge of BASIC.

The program needs EMS memory, so you might need DOSBox.
The program works here with the default name ("Zelda2ed.nes").

z2pledit.exe
overedit.exe

Agreed- try it under DOSBox. Sometimes these wonky DOS programs don't work right under our modern newfangled NT-based operating systems. Smiley

Working. It did, in fact, need EMS memory. I quick adjustment to DOS settings fixed it.

Thanks, guys. Smiley
