would it be possible to somehow bring the updated versions (the psx ones) of FF: 1,2,4,5,6 to snes spiffy graphics and all? or would this be countless hours of torture.
getting some more eye candy for any final fantasy game would make it a bit easier to stomach.

FF4 had a different translation, and it was the original game (aka hardtype). FF6 didn't fix anything, and was god-awful slow. FF1 and FF2 use way too many colors for the SNES to handle.
The only ones that a person would even want to deal with are FF1 or FF2, and unfortunately those seem out due to hardware limitations. The others turned out as pure crap because Square doesn't know how to emulate the SNES on the PS.
In short, no.

Actually Square does know how to emulate it correctly, too bad macro compiled code was really terrible and it wasn't actually any kind of emulation (despite all Snes register being stored in the Psx scratchpad).

why not work with the GBA versions, they are like the PSX versions only slightly updated, and the GBA can handle the colors. THe only downside is lack of buttons and unbareable full-screen resolution

In the case of the GBA versions of FF1 and 2, they play totally differently on the GBA, and the dfficulty is way down (particularly in the case of FF1, what with its new MP system and such). Really, they're totally different games.

You say that like it's a bad thing Okay, I'll admit FF1 was made way too easy unless you don't stop to level up at all (The people who don't were probably this version's target audience) but FF2 was pretty much perfect, it was finally made playable.

FF2 was perfectly playable before (yes, even without glitching the system). And it didn't require any more grinding than original FF1. It's only a pain in the ass if you either use a walkthrough (so you don't spend time exploring, and therefore leveling) or you're trying to create uber-god characters (which gets damned tedious).
FF1 GBA is too freaking easy even if you rush through the game. You STILL end up overleveled.

It's still fun. My only real challenge I ever went for playing FFI through Origins or DoS was making sure all my characters leveled up evenly.
On a side note, I named my White Mage Rolley and my Black Mage Diana. Bonus points if you know who they are.

Portraits? I'd say it's possible, seeing all the work that's gone into The FFVI Hack, though I'm not the door you should be pounding on for that. Wouldn't hold my breath for the sprites, though. The older games used a form of sorta-compression: 3BPP. That is, instead of 4BPP 16-color graphics, the monster sprites (and I don't know what else) actually use only 8 colors, hence "3 Bits Per Pixel". (This is why Barbariccia looks less like an image of Renaissance artwork and more like Marge Simpson in the original FFIV.) Using the upgraded 4BPP artwork from the GBA games would require a hell of a lot of work: rewriting palettes, changing the original graphics routines, finding space for the 33%-larger new artwork... That Japanese guitarist that shows up on Mr. Heavy Metal...?
No. ^_^ You got the "Japanese" part right, though. Check the Project Background on my site for another hint. (It's not Sylvanians!)
