i guess you would somehow need to remove the armor upgrades, but then you would either need to weaken enemies later on in the game, r give zero the abilities he has later on in the series like the jump dash. double jump and etc.
sweetness Zero is leetsauce
many intrawebs 4 you

Or possibly design a version of the Zero suit with upgrades if it's possible at all.

A suggestion I might give to you is, rather than trying to scale X up, why not scale Zero down? Simply modify the hair sprites, etc., to fit within the constraints of X's sprite box. Also, for the other sprites for the helmet upgrades, etc., you'd probably have to find where those sprites are and modify them as well.

Just make it so when you get an upgrade nothing changes, thus you still get the upgrades but no change to x.

If you were always the same color it would be difficult to know which special ability you were on. Furthermore if you made all the power up sprites the same color couldn't that screw up the pallette?

Change the appropriate parts to be black instead of red, a la his 'ultimate armor' in later games.

How about if I make him look like the X2 version when he gets the upgrades: X1 X2

Yeah, that could work. You'd need to style the helmet somehow, though. And I still like my idea of turning his armour black.

First off, lemme say that what you're doing is awesome. I <3 Zero.
Moving on, in terms of the upgrades, changing from X1 to X2 sounds like a good idea, but he still looks relatively the same (aside from the saber, small differences in the armor). Plus, there's gotta be a way to add the hair/saber (if you WANT to add the saber, I don't think he actually uses it in X1).
Turning his armor black does seem like a good solution for the upgrades, because in every X game X winds up getting a great armor, but in the next game he is stripped down to the bone again.
Well, that's my two cents. I will be giving this rom a look over, when I find time, so maybe I'll find something that you missed, though I doubt it.

The Fourth Armor in X5 is completely functional, it just forces you with the "uber" plasma upgrade instead of the "four shot" one. The only time you lose it is if memory serves is when you enter in X's ultimate armor code.

The helmet isn't functioning and the plasma upgrade is stripped down (It only generates one plasma ball, if I remember correctly). Edit: I don't think you can use the Nova Strike either, it's been a long time since I played X5.

On the subject of editing the sprite area: This usually has less to do with pure ASM code and more to do with the sprite mappings. The trouble will be finding out the format of them, but once you do, you can make any sprite as big as you want.
