hi all,
i'm new to romhacking, and i've been doing a lot of internet searching for information about the subject and came across this forum.
my main goal here is to find out just how much can be done with romhacking.
i really want to edit the game donkey kong country and make new levels, and i'm wondering if that's possible with all the different rom utilities, or if that is just too much to do. i'm willing to spend time learning and doing.
if anyone could give me some info, it would be super awesome.
thanks!

Anything is possible in romhacking. It's possible in real life that you'll become the head of a Fortune 500 company, or the governor of your state, or the next big music sensation.
But it takes work.
There are many levels of romhacking, from simple graphics hacks (which can be done with nothing more than a graphics editor such as Tile Layer Pro or Tile Molestor) to dialogue edits (which require script extraction and reinsertion utilities), to actual hacks to the game engine (which will require some programming knowledge), to full-blown mods (which will require mastery of every single aspect of how the game is put together).
It's possible to edit levels in Donkey Kong Country, but as far as I know, it's uncharted territory: put some effort into it, and you may very well be remembered as the first to write a level editor for the game.

You can even take one game and gradually rewrite parts of it so much that after a long time, nothing of the original game is left. You don't have to do that, though. PS: See this link for a document re: tile locations. DKC should be in there as well. (Note to staff: there seem to be two entries pointing to the same file. Accident?)

suzaku,
i do rtfm, that's why i'm asking where i can find info, not if someone can help me do it. thanks for the links, and i fully plan on reading as much as possible so i don't ask stupid questions.
ryusui,
thanks for the info. it sounds like my idea to edit levels may be decently immersed, but at least not impossible. i have some c++ experience, so i'm not flying blind when it comes to programming.
creaothceann,
thanks for the link for the dkc tile locations. i'll take a good look and start downloading utilities, see what i can figure out. sounds like a lot of work, but a lot of good old fashioned programming fun.

Just FYI: It wasn't anything personal or anything, that's just how the BBCode "faq" tag was created. It automatically puts the RTFM bit there and the links.

giangurgolo: IMO, the documents on your site should be submitted. You have some great stuff on Mario RPG, there's not too much data out there for it.
