As I'm given to understand, that's literal, not euphemism. But 'tis not my place to go there, so go further I shall not.

Well, it's annoying, but not a terrible problem for me. I had grand plans of releasing SF1 solely in RUP format; problem is, one of my would-be testers (a major figure in the SF fan community) is a Mac user, and NINJA is pretty much Windows-only. (Yes, it can run on a Mac with a PHP install, but why bother dragging them through all that?) So I gave 'em an IPS instead, one with the VWF fix that Tauwasser inspired me to make.

Now that D has gone haywire, I guess the grand release will have to be an IPS-only affair. Or whatever the Next Big Thing is in patches...

Sure thing. Let me know what you think after you've played it. Smiley

Looking pretty nice so far; I got a decent way's through the game using an older, semi-translated patch and VegitaBOD's FAQ, though any special moves I pulled off were entirely accidental. Seems like a pretty nice translation.

By the way, just as a bit of info, the Playdia version of the game preceeded the OVA release. The Playdia was a sort of animated "Choose your own adventure" with Dragonball Z characters; there were many ways you could go through the game, opting to use different moves and focus on different characters throughout the storyline (I think it was a brilliant idea myself; there must have been a large amount of labor involved). In any case, the OVA is nothing more than a splicing together of game footage (you might say it's really just some guy's playthrough of the game, minus the button menus, and with some added NES footage to limit the length of the movie).

That's what I was told on various sites, anyway. And it also makes sense, considering the OVA was never officially released (hence its cult name as the "Lost movie") and can really only be found on bootlegs and file sharing networks.

My understanding is that the two episode OVA was recently released in Japan in the DBZ Movie Boxset, albeit not remastered. Before this DVD release I think it was a VHS only promotional for the Famicom game, hence the sequences from the game, but I can't confirm this.

As for the Playdia version being released prior to the Famicom, that's wrong. I've checked a few Japanese sites and what the Japanese Wiki page for Dragonball seems to be correct.

Specifically this is the part I'm talking about under the ゲーム section:

Quote
    * ドラゴンボールZ外伝 サイヤ人絶滅計画

        (ファミリーコンピュータ、1993年8月6日、バンダイ)

That's the entry for the Famicom (ファミリーコンピュータ) RPG with a release date of 8/6/1993 and then below you have this:

Quote
    * ドラゴンボールZ 真サイヤ人絶滅計画 -地球編-

        (プレイディア、1994年9月23日、バンダイ)

That's the Playdia (プレイディア) interactive game with a release date of 9/23/1994  -- more than a year after the Famicom RPG.

(Anyone care to tell me what 地球編 means? I imagine something like "interactive" or "revisited" or some such, but I couldn't get anything with a quick dictionary search.)

Most of this false information is propagated by fanboys who don't know what the fuck they're talking about (not meaning you, Aganar) and can't be bothered to do any actual research.

No, no. I meant that the Playdia version was released before the OVA--there's no doubt the Playdia version was released after the Famicom version, and the OVA was certainly released after it as well (considering the OVA at a few points very clearly uses footage from the Famicom version). My hypothesis, based on what I read at sites, was that the timeline went like this:

08/06/93 - Dragon Ball Z Gaiden: Saiya-jin Zetsumetsu Keikaku released for NES
09/23/94 - Dragon Ball Z: Shin Saiyajin Zenmetsu Keikaku: Chikyuu-Hen for Playdia
12/16/94 - Dragon Ball Z: Shin Saiyajin Zenmetsu Keikaku: Uchuu-Hen for Playdia (contains either the second half of the game OR the secret final boss battle--I can't remember which)
Sometime either in late '94 or early '95 - OVA

Again, my reasoning is this:
The Playdia version had alot of footage. Really, ALOT of footage, considering at every moment most characters had up to four actions they could do, and various points of the game allowed different characters to essentially become the "leader". It makes more sense that the OVA would simply be an editing of the ton of footage than for the company to make a bunch of footage for an OVA they would never officially release (until recently, apparently), include some random NES game footage because they were too lazy to animate the rest, and then decide to make a fully animated choose your own adventure game, requiring even more footage and labor to be done (which, as evidenced by the use of NES footage in the OVA, they were probably reluctant to do).

It's also worth noting that the movie has both endings in it, which I believe to be the biggest "tip-off" that the OVA followed the Playdia release. It shows, back to back, the ending of Vegeta killing the scientist and everybody going home, and the ending of Vegeta killing the scientist and the doomsday monster thing being released anyway.

That's just what it seems like to me; I can't find an official release date for the OVA, so you may be right.

"Chikyuuhen" - "Earth Chapter".

My mistake. I totally misread OVA as Famicom. >_>

You may very well be right about the OVA being a compilation of the Playdia version just repackaged as a video. Confirming it one way or the other is a pain in the ass, though. Sad
