I apologize if this should go into the general section.
So... I was scrolling through the tiles of the SNES Princess Maker to find the font. And well... I found several, only one of which made any sense to me. However, it consists of two characters on top of each other for each tile (i attatched an image to explain better). What the heck do i do with this?/Does anyone here have any idea how this works? Aside from this, i can't seem to find any kanji in the tiles. I know the game uses kanji, so does this mean the font is partially compressed?
Ugh, this is probably stupidly difficult for a first project. Thanks in advance, though.

Tried a different bit-depth? Often SNES games will use 2-bitplane data for fonts, or monochrome (1-bpp) for storage in the ROM (and upconvert them to 2-bitplane or 4-bitplane in VRAM).

Changing bitplanes is easy in Tile Layer Pro, a little harder in Tile Molester (but you have many more options). Switch to 2BPP "Game Boy" mode and that font should clear up just fine.

Oh, and BTW, I can personally confirm that there are games that use 1BPP fonts. Patlabor is a good example.
Some of the Gundam games also use their own wacky font storage methods...something like a 16x12 font. You'll have to install PHP and run a util like FEIDIAN to rip 'em for editing/table creation. Wan Wan Meitantei for GBA also uses an editor-unfriendly storage scheme...

Hmm, I was looking through the BS Chrono Trigger Character Library and it had a similar font. I'll post a picture soon to show what I'm talking about. It looked a bit messier than that font though. Would it be a similar issue?
