Back in 2009, I was lurking around here and encountered a thread where someone mentioned that they had made an uncensorship patch for Final Fantasy VII on the PlayStation. The patch would restore all the dialogue and graphics that were censored in the US release.

Unfortunately, this individual was apprehensive about releasing their patch because they believed that no one here would want to play it.

To compound the problem, this place crashed sometime later. When it went back online, it was restored to an earlier back-up before that thread was even made.

So now I can't even remember this individual's name since the thread was wiped from existence.

Anybody here know how I can contact this guy?

I doubt someone would go through all the trouble of hacking, re-translating and re-inserting a new translation and then not releasing it because "no one will want to play it". Un-censoring a game is not a switch you flick on and off. Someone actually has to translate the original script and then insert it into the game. And even if he just changed a few words around, that still needs a translator (unless he made up the new words) and someone to hack it in.

My guess, this person never really finished anything and didn't release it because he didn't have anything.

But if you really want to keep looking, you might want to try archive.org or google's cache of the forum. You might get lucky.

For whatever it’s worth, this pretty much does that, but not on the PSX. (And if you look at the number of people credited, I think it goes to show how much effort wide-sweeping changes to a game the size of FF7 takes.)

Oddly enough, I remember that thread too. And this is an interesting subject.

I find the idea of FFVII needing an "uncensorship" patch inherently hilarious, considering that Squaresoft's idea of translating Barret and Cid's dialogue was to turn every other thing out of their mouths into a four-letter word. Tongue

It needs a retranslation, pure and simple. And I don't mean like an FFVI/CT "retranslation", I mean something that'll make its dialogue and terminology more consistent with later releases.

I would do it myself if it wouldn’t practically guarantee misery and doom on me and my family.

This 1000X.  Occasionally There were still words that would Appear as "$!@#*&", but it didn't matter, you all knew what the word was. Cheesy
