Hi all, It's my first post on the site and i hope i'm not in the bad topic... As the title may suggest i'm trying to translate Earthbound in French with the PK Hack tools. But i've a problem, in french some caracters are written with accent... and in the font i haven't seen any space to paint my own caracters with accent. Do you have any idea to solve this problem? Here you may see the begininning of translation but i don't want to continue till i haven't fix this problem: Thanks for those who will answer and sorry again for my poor english and if i post in the wrong party... I've been hesitating between Personnal Projet and Translation Hacking :banghead:

You're going to have to draw your own characters, replacing the letters with their french counterparts. The easiest way to do this is with a tile editor (if the editor you're using does not have one built in) http://www.romhacking.net/docs/28/ A tutorial on editing tiles for the NES (the ideas will work on the snes) http://www.romhacking.net/utils/108/ A basic tile editor. As long as you only need to put the accents on, you should be able to draw write over the existing letters fairly easily. If things get more complicated than this, then it could become tricky. Good luck to you.

Well, there is going to be a slight problem with this. Earthbound has a VWF (Variable-width Font). This means there's code somewhere that tells the game how wide each character is. If he just randomly inserts a new character, it'll need a width variable for the width table in the game. So he's gonna have to find out where the width table (place where all of the values for each letter's width) is too.

Unfortunately, i have to keep some letters. For example you have: e, é, è, ê in french. (i know we are complicated and not only in soccer) So i think i have to draw it in a part of the rom which is not used, but it's beyond my knowledge.. So if someone could help me thanks a lot

Thanks a lot, i'll see at 210EDA after work and i'll let you know about my progress! June 26, 2010, 12:46:13 am - (Auto Merged - Double Posts are not allowed before 7 days.) [EDIT 1] Sorry for the double post: Here you can see on at first the font for the game text. On the bottom, it's the font which is employed for the flyover text ("The year 199x" and so on and so on...) I've decided with your advice to draw over the small caracters of the flyover text but i don't know how can i put the code into the rom to use it. It seems that it's a little bit more complicated than just insert a hexa code... [EDIT 2] I continue in my research. The normal font use 1F 30 code and saturn font 1F 31, i'm still looking for wich code uses the Large font. [EDIT 3] It's okay folks, i'll delete some caracters of the main font [ ] ~ O (twice) opening and closing brackets and i think it will be ok with this. Moreover i found this (Insert by mod: Might want to warn other users that this is a large text file. ) http://starmen.net/mother2/gameinfo/script/script.txtBut i don't understand what table means? I've been looking for this adress into rom but it's empty. So i wondering what does it mean.

The characters should properly display in 1BPP mode.
It's possible the large font is programmed separately, because it only appears in non-interactive cutscenes, never in actual gameplay.
My guess is that the TABLE part is listing the ASCII character, followed by the ingame counterpart. (example, the first entry: TABLE ! Q) The ASCII value for ! is 0x21, so maybe that means 21=Q in EB's font table.) It would appear that EB's width table only allows for 0x60 characters, so it would end after TABLE (7F) ¯. (the character after TABLE ~)

A few years ago I started working on this "not enough space in the font" problem. I don't know how useful it'll be, but this thread might have info you can use: http://forum.starmen.net/forum/Community/PKHack/32435/page/1The problem is that if you're using PK Hack to edit the game's script, it won't handle my new font properly. So you'll have to manually edit all the text yourself, which is a real pain. The new CCScript program by Mr. Accident might get around that problem, I don't know. I'd personally recommend doing the hacking from scratch though, as EB's text system is really complicated, so you need to know what's going on at all times and have full control of everything. The text system's a real mess
