Does anyone know of a free hex editor that supports unicode table files?  I'm running Windows XP.  I downloaded several hex editors (WindHex, Translhextion, GoldFinger, Thingy32) but none of them seem to display unicode Japanese characters correctly.  Some support Shift-JIS, but that's not good enough for me Smiley

Actually, WindHex does support Unicode as an S-Jis conversion mode.

Yeah. WindHex is basically your only good option. Just hit Ctrl + D to get the Japanese text to display properly once you've loaded a Japanese table.

Hmm.. Then maybe my problem is that I don't know how to type in S-JIS.   My table file is Japanese, but it's UTF-8 and shows up as gibberish in WindHex.  As a test I copy/pasted some S-JIS characters into it and they show up correctly.  Anybody know how to get S-JIS output using Windows' Japanese IDE?

The way I make tables is thus: open JWPce, save it as an .sjis file. Then change the file extension to .tbl.

I've experienced it a couple of times - sometimes the conversion goes wrong and you got a wrong table in WindHex - in any case, check it in JWPCE before loading and delete unnecessary symbols, spaces that may appear.

I am in agreement that support needs to be added for unicode/utf8.

The easiest temporary solution I have is to open it up in notepad++ and change the character set to shift JIS and save it that way.

Thanks everybody.  I downloaded jwpce and was able to save in S-JIS format just fine.  I was able to get my table running in the game I'm working on.  Awesome!

Still wish there was utf-8 support in the hex editor though.  Would take away the need for the extra program.  Is WindHex open source?

@FinS: I actually use notepad++, but didn't know it could convert to shift-JIS.  Maybe I have an old version?

I don't think WindHex is open source. It was written by Bongo, who only seems to visit the Dynamic Designs board these days.
I don't think he's updated it in quite awhile either.
