Hey,

I was wondering if anyone ever used electronic devices such as these scanner pens for your Japanese translation?

Any use on an electronic screen such as a laptop?

Apart that your pen doesn't have japanese, i think that the problem is the same for many electronic translators.
If u use them to translate one word, they work fine but if u translate a phrase u can end up with a translation that doesn't make sense.
Even the allmighty google with his translator make a big mess with phrases to/from  esotic languages ( i tested myself many times with thai language).
But anyway it can sure be helpfull especially with very easy text and short phrases.

I posted the wrong link, however there are a couple of them available on the market, also anyone heard of OCR technologies? You take the pic of an image featuring text (menu, billboard etc), the software extracts them and translate them like communilator for Blackberry.

 However you are right it often is literal word-by-word translation and sometimes meaning is lost.

From my personal experience the OCR technology has problems with graphics in low resolution (and normally u have low res in text in games) and actually u have the same problems then with the translators after the OCR process.

My best guess to go the way of an electronic translator is to find a pure Jap<>Eng translator (online or offline) ... they are normally more precise and have some slang or figurative phrases in it.
