This came as a surprise to me. Now Notepad++ is definitely my editor of choice!

Wow, they're up to 5.6.2 already? Guess the web updater is broken for some reason. I'm still at 5.5.

Why would need S-JIS when UTF8 is around? Just convert it and open it in any serious editing program (even Notepad has UTF8 support).

Because not all of us use UTF8 on tables and such? Because a lot of Japanese games still store their data on S-JIS? Because a lot of software documentation or game readmes from a few years back used S-JIS? Because some of us prefer to use as few apps to read text files as possible? Because some of us like to use Notepad++ for various romhacking related activities and find this to be a good thing?

Considering all the mess done by S-JIS with anything that uses upper ASCII (or unicode characters), I don't see any advantages in keeping that old and broken encoding. Converting tables to also use the same encoding is fairly simple, so nothing's broken when you use the new format.

PS: Why would you download an additional program when Firefox or even Explorer can natively read S-JIS? :0

I prefer Madedit. The built-in HexEditor also supports S-JIS. Since most PSP games are in S-JIS, I use it all the time.
