I recently wanted to test out the new sound improvement hack and found it didn't work at all for me.

When I typically load Visual Boy Advance (my choice of GBA emulator), I get this screen:

I downloaded the patch and patched the GBA rom with LunarIPS. I started the rom and just got a blank white screen. Is the patch bad, or am I doing something wrong?

Wow, its fun when the readme doesn't state which GBA rom to use.  Have you tried applying this to the US and EU version?

Good idea. Judging by the other hacks this guy has released, it's probably for the EU version.

Q: I can't apply your IPS patch to my ROM / It crashes when loading.
Q: On which ROM should the patch apply ?
A: You should use an european verison of Final Fantasy V advance only. The reason for this is that you can play it in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish, so more people are targetted by the hack. I did it on a file I dumped myself with my GBA linker, and it should be compatible with ROMs floating arround the undernet. It won't work with a USA or Japanese ROM (but saves seems to be compatible, altough don't blame me if they aren't).

I'll have to try this. Improving on GBA's greatest soundtrack (IMO) couldn't have been an easy feat.

Do you think it would be possible to improve the sound of Final Fantasy 6 Advance too? Or perhaps FF4A?

I hope so. Lots of tunes on both just seemed off to me in one way or another.

I suppose. Although FF games wouldn't be at the top of my to-do list, personally. There's others that could use it more.

I like the general sample changes in this patch, but man, the intro is kind of ruined.  The streamed orchestral music sounds very nice, yes, but it's no longer in synch with what's going on on screen.  Part of the brilliance of that particular piece is that it's scored to the scene pretty well.

I see. Well it's a mystery to me why Square Enix didn't do what you did in the first place. If it was as simple as switching some instruments and tweaking the sound a little, you'd think they'd have done this themselves...

I usually grab the European versions of GBA ROMs, since they're more often released at the latest date, and have more opportunity to undergo testing and include bugfixes and additional content. (with the exception of a few games, such as The Minish Cap)

This patch worked fine for me, using the EU ROM and VBA 1.8.0
