When I just change one hex byte in the F-Zero X .z64 rom, the emulator won't run the rom.
Is there something that I need to use to fix the problem?

Sounds like a checksum problem. The first meg (after the boot code) of a N64 rom is protected, so you'll need a program to correct the CRC. There should be something on this site archive, but if you don't find nothing take a look at the N64 section of dextrose.com.

PJ64 doesn't like some hacked ROMs so try 1964.
