Well, as some of you might know, Spikeman and various others are translating Boktai 3.

The Mega Man Battle Network series and the Boktai series held a special relationship for awhile...they each featured crossovers of the other, special missions when linked, cameos, etc.

Konami never released Boktai 3 anywhere besides Japan, and because of this, Capcom heavily edited the last two MMBN games. They cut out areas in the game, boss fights, items and chips...pretty much anything related with Boktai. Both factors have endlessly frustrated and disappointed fans of both series.

Now, I'm not starting any projects. But I figured, since Spikeman and Co. are translating Boktai 3, I'd maybe look into a few things, just to see if somethings are possible.

What I would want to do is re-translated the Japanese MMBN6 games, to reflect on the translation of Boktai 3. Everything that was available to the Japanese could be available to anyone else - They could link the translated games, do the sidequests, the whole-shebang.

But, would it be easier to just say, dump the script from the US MMBN6 games, and insert it into the Japanese games, and do other neseccary things....or, hack the already translated MMBN games and make all the cut things available?

As I stated, I'm not starting anything as of now, just looking into what would be the best choice to make if I myself, or anyone else started such a project.

Thanks for taking the time to read my question.

My recollection is that some removed things (sprites, etc) were not simply disabled, but removed from the English version entirely--you can use a cheat device to give yourself a removed battlechip, say, but the graphical effect glitches because the graphics are no longer there.

No, I don't know why they'd do that, but there you have it.

I've looked into it before and in my opinion it'd be less work to dump the script from the US version and insert it into the Japanese one. It'd still be a bit of work because you'd have to implement compression and such, but much less work than reconstruction all the removed features.

Sounds like a very ambitious project. It would sure show Capcom, anyway.

I'd love to help out, but I'm not a translator or hacker. But, if this ever gets off of the ground, I give you my blessings.

And hey Spikeman, I have a question, if you don't mind.

On Boktai Online, LordHuffNPuff stated the following -

We're attempting to program the Event-Exclusive items into the game with alternate get methods, and we've edited ourselves into the credits along with the Beta Testers, IIRC.  That's about it.

Have you guys considered, or would it be possible for you guys to release two patches? One with the original game unedited, and the other with the extras added, as Huff stated?

I mean, say this project does get started someday. I'd love if I was able to do the events as they were meant, by linking the two carts and such.

Just a thought.

Thank you all for the help and quick replies. If I get some free time soon, I might dig around in the ROM and see what's up with the situation.

Hopefully, I can start this someday. But, I can't guarentee anything.

Wait a second... Is Boktai Konami or Capcom owned?

I was always under the impression it was Konami owned, or more specifically, Kojima owned...

Boktai was published and owned by  Konami. The only connection with Capcom is the Mega Man cross-over stuff.

That's not a bad idea, now that you mention it. Although I think what we were planning is a chest that appears in a certain spot after you beat the game containing only the items you could have received at Konami events. Not the ones you get from linking. Although I'm not 100% sure.

Oh, sorry If I misunderstood Huff's statement.  Embarrassed

Still, I like the chest idea very much. Hopefully the project can continue soon so you guys can get to that point.
