I don't know how to use Lunar Magic very well (this video was my first time.), but I've had this idea stuck in my head since the topic was made. Now I dunno if it's been done before (I tend to not play hacks.) but don't go stealing it! ::Edit:: I'm also really glad it worked. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT4t09wAwXM

Looks sweet. Oh, and if we do this, will we edit the overworld too? And maybe some sprite editing would be nice. :Edit: Forgot to say this, but I wanna edit Yoshi's island 2. The level, not the game. .

Oooo! Your edit gave me an idea. Picture a castle with a maze made out of those triangle walls. It'd be fun. You should make a level like that.

That's what I had in mind, I've got it all drawn out on some graph paper, the only problem is it's going to take me awhile to get used Lunar Magic. I think it'd be best if each level had fresh ideas, and little to no repeating of level designs.

Can I do one of the eight *Special* levels hidden at the end of the game? (Funky, Outrageous, Way Cool, etc.)

Do you know their level numbers?
I was doing a level hack of this game already, and I decided to work on it some more. I was making a long, downwards level when something went wrong. The background is fine at first, but quickly becomes glitched up. Does anyone know why? Is it because I'm starting at the top and going down?

Save the level as a .mwl and link to it (here, pm, whatev) and I'll try to fiddle with it. My incompetence is potentially great, however.

Srry, already deleted it. I mussed w/ it for hours but got nothing. :'( I think I know what happened, but...
I just noticed something. I went to level 108, and it was a load of garbage that didn't even have an exit. It could be useful for a little sub-section of a level.

You've got to stop double posting. Use the modify button.

If you guys go through with this, there's one gameplay hack you've got to include: fix the goombas. For some reason SMW goombas are like super goombas or something. I think there may even be a patch for this around already.
If you did that, then you could use goombas as early level cannon fodder like they where ment to be, rather than obnoxious mid game baddies that require special effort to kill. That would be more fitting, I think.
I'd be interested, but what platforms does Lunar Magic support? Windows only? I'm running a Linux only box, so unless Lunar Magic runs under Linux (or Wine) or there is an alternative method of editing the levels, I can't participate.
Anyhoo, I'm off to go investigate the options for SMW level editing. I'm interested in participating if I can find (or hack up) some tools to work with.
Edit: I just tried Lunar Magic out in Wine and it seems to work. I didn't do any major testing, just started it up, but it ran, so I'm in. (Unless I run into LM issues.)
I've got no real preference for particular levels, but I'm not the best at playing platformers, so I'd be better off editing stuff early on in the game before the difficulty ramps up too high. (So I can playtest it myself without dying too often.)
Are we going to do a world map edit as well? I think we ought to, as it would add some polish to the hack. If we are, it would be a good idea to get some idea of what the world will look like before begining to edit the levels. That way, the level desginers will know what sort of themes and types of levels are needed. It would also be good to know where the Switch Palaces are going to be located, so that level designers can consider which blocks may or may not be switched on yet when designing levels.
If we do replace the world map, I'd recommend a highly non-linear layout. SMW has some non-linearity, but it's basically limited to multiple paths through individual worlds. There are only two real ways to get to the end, the normal route (with some optional paths on each island) or star road. I think it'd be interesting to make it so that there are several compleatly different routes you can take.
This would provide and interesting change from the original game. What do you think?
RE Space King: How are you planning on organizing this project. It would be nice to have some webspace or a wiki or something. Or are you simply going to create a project thread and handle it all there? (Which could work just as well and may be less effort.)
